On rare occasions lunar halos and lunar coronas can appear together [link to home.hiwaay.net] Some interesting facts about halos: Halos always occur exactly 22 degrees away from the sun or moon. Occasionally, intense halos can be double halos, just as intense rainbows can be doubled. Intense halos can also produce "moondogs" or "sundogs," very bright regions on the halo evenly spaced at 90 degree intervals around the halo. [link to curious.astro.cornell.edu] |

I am in Southern West Virginia, however the one that I saw was two overlapping rings, much like a wedding band set laying on a table top. The primary one had the slight rainbow tint of the red and blue, the other was much lighter and was harder to see, but it was there. Really cool stuff!! I think this is the first time I have ever seen a double halo. |
