Prominent Scientists sign Declaration that Animals have Conscious Awareness, just like us
[link to io9.com]

"An international group of prominent scientists has signed The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness in which they are proclaiming their support for the idea that animals are conscious and aware to the degree that humans are — a list of animals that includes all mammals, birds, and even the octopus. But will this make us stop treating these animals in totally inhumane ways?"

by the way, star ratings above "one star" would be appreciated so that an actual discussion can be formed about this, unfortunately it seems there are some out there who refuse to even read this because it assaults their religious/militant core beliefs of eating animals? jeez

Re: Prominent Scientists sign Declaration that Animals have Conscious Awareness, just like us
Wow!

The body of scientific evidence is increasingly showing that most animals are conscious in the same way that we are, and it's no longer something we can ignore.

What's also very interesting about the declaration is the group's acknowledgement that consciousness can emerge in those animals that are very much unlike humans, including those that evolved along different evolutionary tracks, namely birds and some cephalopods.

"The absence of a neocortex does not appear to preclude an organism from experiencing affective states," they write, "Convergent evidence indicates that non-human animals have the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of conscious states along with the capacity to exhibit intentional behaviors."

well, not to be all "high and mighty" but... I think a lot of people realized this without the seal of approval from some official Cambridge scientists. Is that really what it takes these days to convince people of anything?

No, don't follow your intuition, don't have individual thought... unless some scientist or media-approved source confirms something, it is BS

I suppose, in accepting this as fact, the next logical step would to be giving animals the same rights as humans, and protect them with the same laws, am I correct?

I believe it is Ecuador who have implemented "the law of mother earth" giving our planet the same rights as humans, protecting ecosystems and all of her natural environments. This should include all animals i hope! we can live much more effective, efficient and thriving existences without the necessity of butchering animals for the sake of corporacratic fast food retailers!

how much money has been spent on the iraq war? how much money has mcdonalds spent on advertising this year? how much money could've been made over the past 80 years if marijuana/hemp was legal and taxed? how much money would it take to research cancer cures which are NOT patent-able, yet proven to work, in comparison to the combined revenues of pharmaceutical companies? I think these are more pressing questions, if you're going to be bitching about wasted money

Animals DO NOT have "consciousness" like humans! Animals have ELEMENTALS, which is the closest they will get to a "proto-consciousness", so to speak! Animals don't know what they are! They feel they are alive, they feel their existence, but they don't know the purpose of it and they don't seek a purpose for life, like humans!

I don't know about Dolphins, but animals don't have a consciousness like humans have, THOUGH the elementals of domestic dogs and cats can evolve into human essence, which will allow further births as humans.

well, since the linked article has proof, where's yours?

perhaps the fact that humans question whether they have a purpose in life... and create all sorts of BS gobbely-gook to explain why, makes them stupider than animals?

also, do your statements seek to justify the treatment of animals today... i.e., imprisonment, torture, and killing?

so, due to the fact that they are unlike us, they should be allowed to be... imprisoned, tortured, and killed? they still have emotion, not just due to their "current environment"... they can recognize people/animals they know, and have been shown to communicate things between themselves, as well as figure out problems. I mean, jesus, elephants remember where they were born, and go back there to die... could you do that, without any gps or road signs, just walking around outside?

what great amount of "culture" have you produced, man?

now, compare these animals, with this;

i think it would be wise for folks to identify the things which cause them to want to think in a certain way. anyone who is going to argue that animals are idiotic and lower than humans, exist for our benefit, for our food, etc. obviously themselves began eating animals and enjoying animal products before they created their rational arguments as to why it is okay to do so...

and how about this?

OP, I'm not vegetarian because animals eat each other all of the time, too. What I don't like is our cruel behavior towards the slaughter. To captive animals on top of each other in their own feces for long periods of time is cruel. To make them suffer instead of a quick kill is cruel. Too much cruelty goes into our food and I do believe it releases negative, poison energy into our own dna and poisons us humans in ways we are unawares.

Some religious people should realize that even in the Bible it states that we will be judged on how we've treated our animals. So, even though we are supposed to have dominion over them (if you're a Bible believer) you are supposed to put a certain "care" into your power over them and that care is related to their life not just how to beef them up and make them suitable for eating.

I don't doubt it! My animals amaze me with their intelligence! Have one dog who KNOWS when we are about to reach our destination when we are in the car. Never fails...the last turn we make before we get there you can just tell she knows were are just about there by the way she gets excited.

Have another dog who can open the fridge....and I did not train him to do that.

My cat can open our sliding glass screen door to get out. He just sticks his little nails in the screen and slides it right open....but we lock it now. Love my kitty to much to take the chance!

would like to point out quick...

think about this, what percentage of animal species are herbivores?

what was the diet of our human ancestors?

that's right... plants... plants... and more plants

humans began killing animals during the last ice age, out of desperation, due to lack of adequate edible foliage...

I am a living creature empath, , there are a lot of empaths better than me..is true..you wont believe how much..you wont believe. We need to treat creatures with respect and we need to take our time to observe how everything works around us. we will learn a lot from them, You see ,they are really , really connected with the Creator of all, a direct connection if you will. They are for a purpose near us..specially dogs...
