Just HOW exactly do rockets work in space in a vacuum?
When there is nothing in space to push against to move the rocket forward?

I have been told that the propellent inside the rocket pushes the rocket, and makes it move, but it doesn't make any sense to me...

Please am I missing something?

yeah a brain. you answered your question and then said it doesnt make sense.

We have been in space we have been to other planets and we have been to the moon. please get off glp because it fucks with your mentality.

If you dont understand that people here live in a fantasy then you dont need to be here.

1) )o2 is carried in the rocket for the engines, so no issue there.
2) There may be no atmosphere, but that does not men space has nothig to push against, just much less.

Ok i got this visualisation. please check if correct analogy:

Suppose I have a firecracker in the box.

When the firecracker explodes, it moves the box.

In a vacuum it would do the same..

Is this how rockets work...kinda?

I've actually wondered this myself OP. It must be the "every action has equal and opposite reaction" thing. Since the spacecraft is exerting a force within itself, then it's propelled forward.

I think you could equate it to letting go of a balloon filled with air in a vacuum chamber. It should react the same way as it does outside the chamber?

Hi there OP, I had the same question a few months ago, I couldn't get why the rocket moves in a vacuum with nothing to push against, Visualize this, A Hot gas EXPANDS in a spherical way, from the center outwards, Comnustion chamber in a rocket is a where the gas is ignited and combusted, there is a hole in the back of this chamber where the Very hot exhaust gas comes out, but the same gas is pushing the opposite way cuz is trying to expand, thus making the rocket moves in a vacuum

The Rocket will not move it just falls. The question is how do you get it to fall faster or apply the friction to fall faster in a vacuum? good point.

Re: Just HOW exactly do rockets work in space in a vacuum?
Rockets can't fly higher then 75 miles altitude due to the tin Air, exactly the same altitude as Goddard rockets got... the Air is there so tin that even a parachute in free-fall doesn't open...

OP you are genial... you discovered a Giant deceive... thank-you.

Rockets working in the vacuum of space was first proposed by Prof Goddard of Clark College (Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections, v71, N2, 1919). He was working for the military. The New York Times, accurately trashed him on January 13, 1920 (p12, col5) in a "Topic of the Times" editorial (the Rice University archive was removed in 2008). As the New York Times became more and more the official propagandist of repressive government, they retracted the editorial in 1969.

Rockets in space work on compressed snailfarts.
"The world will soon wake up to the reality that everyone is broke and can collect nothing from the bankrupt, who are owed unlimited amounts by the insolvent, who are attempting to make late payments on a bank holiday in the wrong country, with an unacceptable currency, against defaulted collateral, of which nobody is sure who holds title."

^BASICALLY this. the craft moves forward because the rocket exhaust/force moves backward. it's simple. seriously how old is the kid who made this thread? when do we learn about equal and opposite reactions? 1st grade?

Re: Just HOW exactly do rockets work in space in a vacuum?
Every rocket engine has that bell shaped thing called the expansion cone on it where the exhaust shoots out of. The fuel and the oxidizer are mixed just ahead of that cone and ignite. As they burn the gasses expand rapidly and push on the expansion cone. It's the pressure the rapidly expanding gas applied to the cone that creates the thrust.

If there was no expansion cone, thrust only be generated by the fuel shooting out of the tanks under pressure, like a blown up balloon released with the end untied. The rocket wouldn't go even a fraction as fast. Whether the fuel was burning or not when it left would make no difference.

The kid's question is legit. The fuel and oxidizer burn after they've already left the rocket. How can a cloud of gas separate from the rocket itself crate thrust? It's not like air shooting out of a balloon at all.

The answer is, the expanding cloud of exhaust gas is pushing on the rocket.

Newton's 3rd law baby!

Imagine the fuel is like a bomb, it explodes, the explosion pushes against the rocket, rocket moves.

I see many nay sayers... but not one who comes with facts...

Newton Laws need atmosphere... Steam was pushing Air claimed Sir Iscaac Newton... and Einstein & Goddard dethroned the newton laws... but we didn't get any prove of this since 1920.

Now who has the prove Rocket can push against nothing...

The question was asked here many times the last years but until now not one has proven they can push against nothing...

I qoute some remarks I have read here in GLP:

> Einstein and NASA dethroned poor old Newton... he hooo... I still asking
> for proof, rockets can provide thrust in vacuum space... and I am
> defending newtons laws in their true sense, they don't work in vacuum

Re: Just HOW exactly do rockets work in space in a vacuum?
Hold a brick and stand on a skateboard. Then throw the brick. You and the skateboard will move in the opposite direction, due to the "equal and opposite reaction" explained by Isaac Newton.

The rocket does the same, except instead of throwing bricks, it ejects particles of burning fuel at high speed. The "opposite reaction" propels the rocket forward.

(The oxygen to burn the fuel is contained in tanks inside the rocket itself in chemical form, usually as liquid oxygen, although other compounds that contain oxygen can also be used.)
