Anonymous Coward User ID: 1066503 United States 09/04/2012 05:01 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | That's because it's been shown to be a hoax. Every time someone might win Randi pulls a runner and won't accept their challenge. He also forbids scientific testing as proof, which is a big sign right there. He's a stage magician, and his challenge is now and always was, just for show. Also he was accused of pedophilia and hide the fact that he;s gay for years. *I think the pedophilia thing was just "related" to him, and not anything he did. He came out of the closet though, all by himself. Now, that isn't wrong or anything. Except for the fact that he showed himself capable of being willing to lie for decades, making him an unreliable witness to anything. The "Randi Challenge" is a fraud though. Anyone saying otherwise either is trying to act as a fraud themselves or is lacking information. |

Anyone saying otherwise either is trying to act as a fraud themselves or is lacking information. Show me one person he didnt accept. Everyone who tried has failed, and the big names are too scared to even try it. There are a lot of people that don't make it through the process, which is code for "we don't want to lose". There was an interesting case a few years ago where a man showed that he didn't need to eat food, and could do it under medical supervision. They denied to test him, not because it wasn't supernatural enough, but because it could lead to "harm" to the person. Though a few days, or even weeks of fasting in a hospital would be safe enough. He had the other proof and challenge the claim, but they stuck fast to it. After a while and with data in hand showing he'd already done it for a shorter period under a doctors care, it became very clear that it was a fraud and that no one would ever be allowed to take the challenge if they might win. It's not real, it's a scam set up by a professional liar. Are you really going to claim that James Randi isn't a liar? Show me where he;s only told the truth... Oh, wait, that's already been shown to be false. Sorry. I guess you should pick a better person to follow? How about the scientists actually doing real research? It's out there, if you look. Tens of thousands of studies. Most showing actual anomalies. You can't keep claiming to be open minded if you won't even bother to look into things. Skeptics don't, because they aren't skeptics, but people with a specific idea already entrenched in their minds. Are you a Skeptic or a person willing to look at whatever the universe has for them, no matter what it is? |

It's the same one. Why are you trying to defend someone who's a known liar? What do you gain by doing it? What are your real motives? I support scientific research myself, not magicians parlor games meant to confuse the issue. |

I experience it almost everyday, slow days happen but almost everyday I'll get on the same wave length as someone and if you haven't experienced that, don't know what else to tell ya. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1066503 United States 09/04/2012 05:31 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I agree, very similar things. The basic point being that no amount of proof will ever be allowed to lead to a pay out, based on the beliefs of the people involved. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 21041180 United Kingdom 09/04/2012 05:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I looked up Kent Hovind's $250,000 dollar offer, which is clearly based on the Randi Challenge. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1066503 I agree, very similar things. The basic point being that no amount of proof will ever be allowed to lead to a pay out, based on the beliefs of the people involved. They are very different, Randi and the applicant first have to agree how it will be done and measured. So if the applicant agrees how it will be measured then it would be easy for them to win, yet no-one has as Randi is often able to recreate their 'powers' himself very easily. |

Oh? That's not what I heard at all, and the web-site said no one had ever gotten to that stage of things. Remember though, you really can't trust those people. Trust science. It isn't perfect, but it generally comes to a correct conclusion. Randi and crew have a huge horse in the race and admitting that they even might be wrong is counter to their own best interest. |

It is the complete opposite. If they had someone win then they offer to support that person. The money it would bring in would be enormous so its in Randi best interest for someone to win. |

Sure, but I can "recreate" brain surgery, that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist at all. He's a magician, he could fake brain surgery too. The point? All it proves is that he's good at faking things. Also, how many people saw that the Randi crew was setting them up to fail, using protocols to make legitimate abilities not seem that way, and so couldn't agree with the testing? It's one way that fraud enters the picture here. They control things so that it looks legitimate on the surface, while not being that way. All good cons do that. |

You need to learn to read, it is not just Randi who sets up the protocols, it is the applicant too. If the applicant has a special power then it would be no problem for them to prove it.
