A Planet called Marduk struck a planet called Tiamat and smashed it to bits, hurling a huge chunk into our orbit and forming the Earth, the rest forming the rings around Saturn and the Asteroid belt. All planets have rings, just some more dense than others. This is due to passing comets dropping off stuff that gets into orbit and sticks around like satellites.

Marduk was the name of the planet, and also the name of one of the Annunaki that took power in Babylon. This was the birth of Monotheism, because of the confusion. "Marduk" created the Earth, you see.
