why can I see studio lights on the moon? [PHOTO]

In the tv videos of the Earth seen through the orbiters port , half way to the Moon, why can't we see stars?
No sun there. Nobody is shooting at the Sun.
No reflection.
Camera is inside something like a dark room.
You SHOULD see stars!!!
But nada. Not a singil star. No stars.

Because it is still exposed for a bright sunlit object (the earth) and the camera isn't designed to film something as relatively dim as stars.

That's the Earth.

Here's a place you might find a clue. Hold up that iPad, center it on the full Moon (which incidentally has about a quarter of the albedo), and take a picture. The iPad will automatically adjust to get you a good exposure of the Moon.

Now count the stars that appear in the picture.

What comment do you want?

Each Apollo mission deployed a variety of scientific equipment, not limited to high-gain antenna, ALSEP package, television camera, DAC, SNAP power source...

If you go through the mission reports or the shorter descriptions (or even the press release packages) you'll find a nice list of experimental packages.

Or, if you really want to know which specific things are at the ends of those cables, there are third-party maps of most of the landing sites. And the larger pieces/concentrations of gear show up in the LRO pictures and are labeled for you.




Okay, okay, I take pity. The picture in question is AS11-40-5872; meaning from the only color roll taken on EVA by the Apollo 11 crew. Which means the astronaut is probably Buzz, since Neil hogged the camera! But anyhow; Sun is roughly to the left, so we're South of the spacecraft.

The only thing out in that direction (A11 didn't have as much gear as later missions!) is the TV camera. And, indeed, here's a picture of it from about 20 minutes later -- the cable is quite clear.

That might very well be the cable that connects the TV-camera with the transmitter.
On Apollo 11 the high-gains antenna of the LM was used for the TV link.
Later missions had a separate transmitter.



The sun is several billions time brighter than any star.
