How exactly could Syria get involved into this?

For what its worth, I don't think there will be a ground invasion. I think the IDF will take out as many sites as they can. If they go into Gaza they will have to occupy it completely, leaving themselves in a very bad place defense wise. Occupy or level it. Neither is a good option.

If we take this at face value, then it's time to call their bluff. The longer we wait to turn that wretched hive of scum and villainy into an expanding cloud of monatomic plasma, the worse the retaliatory stroke will be when we finally get around to it.

If we don't take it at face value, that particular patch of land makes a nice buffer between China and Europe, and between Russia and Africa. The mad dog illusion provides a mask for doing some crazy shit and blaming it on the religious nutters.

Appears a cease fire is in the works, but before that each side what's to make sure they have gotten their hits in.

If a ceasefire does not materialize, Israel will be in Gaza before tomorrow am.

Israel may in fact go for the throat for a few hours and then remove troops as the cease fire takes hold.

That was the pattern in the Lebanon-Hezbollah 2006 war. Israel did not send in the full invasion force until a couple days before the cease fire was declared. The difference here is that if the IDF goes in big into Gaza it will be a lot more difficult to disengage (compared to Lebanon) due to the density of the population.

True, unless they avoid Gaza city and stay in rural fields, but still make a point. They only have a few hours if they are to permit this faux cease fire to continue.

IAEA: Iran nuclear work at constant pace despite sanctions
Iran is enriching uranium at a constant pace and international sanctions aimed at making Tehran suspend the activity are having no visible impact, the UN nuclear watchdog chief said in unusually blunt remarks on Tuesday.

The point made by Yukiya Amano, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, reinforced the view of many analysts that increased Western economic pressure on Iran has failed to make it change its nuclear course.

He spoke a day before senior officials from six world powers were to meet in Brussels to weigh strategy towards Iran amid signs of a renewed push to resolve the dispute diplomatically after US President Barack Obama's re-election.

Asked whether sanctions had produced any deterrent effect, Amano told reporters in Paris: "We are verifying the activities at the nuclear sites in Iran and we do not see any effect. They are, for example, producing enriched uranium up to 5 percent and 20 percent with a quite constant pace."

Bibi is ruined politically if he accepts a ceasefire. He has accomplished nothing with this operation. The rockets still rain down and Hamas will still have them...so he had done all this and gained not one thing. I actually admire Olmert more at this point..at least in Cast Lead he went in on the ground and stopped rocket fire for over a year. The goal was to stop Hamas and their ability to fire rockets....they have actually emboldened them. Israel without a ground operation will not accomplish anything.

The public overwhelmingly agrees with his (Bibi's) actions so far. He will win points from center and left of center if he agrees to ceasefire now. That builds up his party taking from those elements politically that would have the greatest chance of defeating him in the next election. Thus, politically so far so good for him.

The right may not be happy. However, there too could now be an adjustment in the government to create a unity government for Israel's protection even eliminating elections of the center and right decide Israel is in this for the long haul (meaning taking on Iran) and the politicians now realize it.

No matter what, there are efforts to ensure there are traps so that this politically would not end well for him (Bibi) even if he enters an immediate cease fire. All Hamas has to do is launch a few missiles here and there closer to election for Bibi to lose the right of center groups.

I for one think Israel must go in and clean some of the mess again before entering a cease fire as Israel needs a clean slate for the south from missile escalations while the hard stuff gets dealt with (Iran and the north). If he cleans things, he could move some of the Iron Domes to the north.

The good that has come of this, or bad too, the citizens of Israel are now de-sensitized to missile attacks and that is what Israel will face when taking on Iran within months.

Netanyahu: We Are Taking Part in Battle Against Terror

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said in a joint statement with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, that "something is now happening that is unmatched in history. We are taking part in the battle against terrorism during which our citizens are under attack."

MK Arden: Israel Not Striving for Ceasefire
Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Arden (Likud), addressed the possibility of a cease-fire Tuesday night, saying, "Israel is not striving for a ceasefire."

"What will the talk of a cease-fire get us?" he asked in an interview with Army Radio, adding "If a missile fell they (Hamas) would say it was an isolated incident. What international guarantees can the world give to residents of the south?"
Arden expects that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will "put pressure on the Egyptians so that the smuggling of arms will stop."

there is no incentive right now for Israel to ceasefire. Any ceasfire now will be seen as a sign of weakness on their part, Hamas wants it because it's losing and they need to re-arm plain and simple, has nothing to do with what's best for the people. If Hamas was interested in what was good for the people they represent (which they are doing a terrible job of right now) they are the ones that should be groveling and making concessions, not the Israelis in any way,shape, or form.

I hope the Israeli govt and the IDF commanders see it for what it is by the Egyptians and Hamas or the other players, just a ploy for time and some temporary quiet and we'll be back at this in a year or two tops guaranteed. This cycle has to end.

PROBLEM is, Iran will be nuclear by then!

NO CEASE FIRE YET for those of you trying to figure out the diplomatic ball. Seems quite reasonable that israel wants missiles to stop firing and then Israel will stop firing. THis next night's lull is where Egypt is hoping a cease fire will take hold.


Egypt official says Gaza truce talks continuing

CAIRO - Talks between Israelis and Palestinians over a Gaza truce are continuing but the Egyptian mediators are still hopeful a deal can be reached later on Tuesday, an Egyptian official said.

"The talks are still continuing," the official, who declined to be named, told Reuters. He said Egypt was "hopeful" of an agreement later on Tuesday, adding: "We are more hopeful today than yesterday."

Bennett: Israel Ready to Sit in Shelters so IDF Can Win

Chairman of the Jewish Home, Naftali Bennett, said that "halting the operation without stopping Hamas will place the residents of Israel under more rounds of missiles, leading to casualties and destruction."

"I appeal to Prime Minister Netanyahu, give a command. Israel is demanding an end to the terror, Israel is demanding to go back to school, work, coffee shops - without fear. That's not asking too much. Israel is strong in spirit and is ready to sit in shelters so that the IDF can perform its task," added Bennett.

Brig-Gen Chen Calls to Turn Operation into War

Brigadier General Amatzia Chen (Patzi) called on Israel's leaders to change the current situation from an operation to an all out war.


In an interview with Arutz 7 he said, "This nonsense we constantly hear from the Prime Minister and his ministers that our objective is to improve deterrence, it's nonsense. Terror does not understand this and the fact is that they continue to use this terrorism against us for thirty years. They took into account that we would carry out such an operation and it just does not scare them. They have defined their ultimate goal which is to conquer the State of Israel, so we need to act accordingly in response."

Nope...we have no indication of the movement of ground troops. The illumination may have been tied to a need by special forces that are on the ground in Gaza. A thought here was that the newest night goggles have the ability to block/ignore very bright light. The older generation would be completely blinded by a flare and would become unusable for quite some time giving the SF guys an advantage for some period of time.
