RT @BreakingNews: NATO: Allies unanimously express grave concerns over reports Syria may be considering use of chemical weapons - @Reuters

"grave" in diplo-speak is bad mojo. From all the reporting I've seen on the Syrian chem weapons intel, all but one report suggested that Syria was making moves that could almost only be interpreted as preparation for use of sarin.

There was one UK source that said they were not quite in "panic mode" just yet . . . but it sounds like they are getting close.

Assylum for Assad in Iran means certain death for him and he knows it. We have multiple psychological profiles on Assad over several years that have us convinced he is not in charge of this dog and pony show. We are talking a somewhat meek well educated eye doctor, not a ruthless dictator with the temper of a Putin that has no idea how to run a country let alone a country in civil war. Someone (military leaders)puts on a show now and then and launches a couple of jets that kill a few people, but you have never seen the might and power of the Syrian military unleashed on the rebels. Why not? The rebels have Damascus surrounded, Assads last stronghold and we don't see much if any resistance by the Syrian army. Why not? We think this might be a quiet, well orchestrated coup d'etat with Assad reluctantly playing along in exchange for him, his family and probably friends allowed to live. Take this scenario and apply it back over that last six months and see what you come up with.

Hard to say because we really aren't sure who is pulling the strings. No one has actually seen the mixing of any binary components. I am sure that there are many that would argue with us, but we think, even though it is incredibly dangerous, they have moved precursors that should be separated into fewer well protected areas to keep them out of the hands of the somewhat unpredictable rebels. Also a few scientists have told us if you mix the chemicals and then don't use them they are reduced in effectiveness. Either way the collective "we" have waited to long to take out these chemicals by air strikes when they were still inert and separated. Now an air strike will cause the chemicals to mix if not done correctly and there isn't a lot of experience to rely on for this specific scenario. The wild card here is whether Assad or the military may go all genocidal on us and out of sheer revenge they decide to take out the ungrateful citizenry and then they head for the Russian hills where they will never be heard from again. I don't know...you tell me.

It has always been assumed that with a slight conversion to current off the shelf munitions you could cause an EMP blast. However, we now have a bomb that is dedicated to creating an EMP blast that is designed to be an EMP blast, not a bastardization of some other type of bomb. These are specifically designed to take out electronics...for good.

From the article.....................
For years many people felt that in order to create an EMP weapon, there might be some collateral damage involved from some form of an explosion used to create the pulse. However, this system does not make use of any explosive whatsoever, thereby resulting in zero collateral damage.

Boeing in partnership with the US Air Force Research Laboratories Directed Energy Directorate created the CHAMP weapons system, and successfully tested the system over the Utah desert on a military compound. The exact details on how the device was made will remain a secret, but we do know that it is transmitted from a missile-like device that flies over the intended target and directs its concentrated microwave energy.

Assad’s chemical weapons units head out of Damascus toward Aleppo

[link to debka.com]

debkafile’s military and intelligence sources reported that convoys of the Syrian army’s chemical weapons units headed out of Damascus under cover of dark and turned north up the road to Aleppo. Their destination is not yet known.
The convoys were ferrying self-propelled cannons for firing shells loaded with poisonous sarin gas.

Syrian President Bashar Assad had evidently decided to ignore the warnings President Barack Obama issued Monday night that there would be consequences if he or anyone in Syria resorted to chemical warfare and each would be held accountable.

Our sources report that the Syrian ruler is aparently gambling dangerously on the Americans holding back from attacking the convoys as long as they deploy unconventional weapons, and would only react when they are used.

He is also taking advantage of the heavy winds, rain and cloud over this part of the eastern Mediterranean and counting on the weather to obstruct military operations against his chemical weapons units.

By the time the weather clears some time Thursday, the units will be in place in battle formation. Meanwhile, bombing the convoys in windy weather could cause the deadly gas to spread out of control in unpredictable directions.

In Brussels, a NATO official announced that the alliance had agreed to augment Turkey’s air-defense capabilities by deploying Patriot missiles to Turkey.

debkafile’s military sources report that by the time the missiles arrive, the Syrian chemical weapons units will almost certainly have reached their pre-planned positions. Furthermore, the Patriot air defense systems are not designed to counter artillery and would therefore be unable to stop shells loaded with poison gas.

Thanks, Gerry. Ok, I know I'm a bystander in this field, but I've got to question the date. There is SO much I wish I could tell you guys, but not here. Let's just say I know WAY more mil. pilots, past and present, than are legally allowable by law, AND have a couple of "certifiable" rocket scientists in the family, retired and new. I'm trying to decide how to say this. I think this date is "convenient". I don't think it's as new as stated in the article.

Some conflicting reports now coming out -

No evidence Syria mixing chemical agents, Pentagon official says
By Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube, NBC News

There is no evidence yet that the Syrian military has actually begun the process of mixing precursor chemicals to produce deadly Sarin nerve gas, a senior defense official told NBC News on Tuesday.

According to the official, despite the increased activity around several chemical weapons sites, including truck movements in and out, it’s not even clear that the precursors have been moved from separate storage sites to one location.

On Monday, US officials said the Syrian regime has ordered its Chemical Weapons Corps to “be prepared” which was interpreted to mean get all the precursors and pieces together to at least begin preparations for weaponization. The officials stressed the directive did not come directly from President Bashir Assad and did not order the use of chemical weapons.

All press releases like this are timed to create the most impact. It also takes some time before secret projects make their way through the system for public release. Nothing happens by accident. I'm sure there was a reason for releasing this information now, but I don't think it has anything to do with Syria or possibly even the ME.

Those officials said yesterday, as the senior official repeated Tuesday that no evidence process has begun.

One senior official warned that bombing chemical weapons sites would pose a high risk of releasing deadly clouds of the Sarin nerve gas. Instead, the official suggests airstrikes could be aimed directly at Syrian regime leadership. “We would punish the leadership,” said the official.

As of today, US defense and military officials tell us there are still no warning orders or alerts to any US military forces to prepare for any possible military action against Syria.

As I said earlier, there is no credible information that they have begun mixing the precursors and I have several doubts about the Debka article. Most of their articles have a modicum of truth and a whole lot of literary psychological warfare. We scan their articles for that tiny bit of truth, and then analyze the rest of the article to figure out whom it was aimed at and why it was released when it was released.

The Lebanese Newspaper Almustaqbal, which is linked with the Syrian opposition, reported that Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani told Iraqi officials that the situation in Syria is critical and President Bashar Assad will not be able to maintain hold of the country much longer.

According to the report "Larijani stressed Tehran's commitment to Syria and said Iran is willing to give Assad asylum in case matters reach the point of no return." (Roi Kais)

DBEKA does emit a little truth and some good fiction.

Myself, someone is pushing for a fight or someone is pushing for Assad to go while the getting is still good.

Hmmm, I'd also bet that the weapon is scalable - which begs the questions: who would we want to threaten and why given Syria and the chemical weapons problem? Russia? As Gerry has mentioned, we are putting someone on notice.

Per Gerry's thoughts which are quite brillant as always!

The one nation stopping intervention in Syria is Russia, perhaps an un-sophisticated group of leaders feels that raising the wmd card right now will convince Russia to back off and let the western nations do their thing. It may be working.

The other would be Iran. Get Iran to release her grip on Syria and or fear a loss of Syria and thus feeling boxed in, she would be more willing to cave in on nuclear negotiations!

My only reason to pause and still consider the WMD card real and dangerous is based on credible information provided over the past few months, though my eyes have not seen it first hand, some have and reported it and some are out there right now gathering new intelligence. We merely get fed stories and truth in a mix where it is difficult to determine what is accurate and what is actually just a ploy and we are merely following along.

I think I need a shower!

Over the red line: how Nato plans to hit Assad

Michael Evans and Deborah Haynes describe contingency plan for a no-fly zone if chemical weapons are prepared for deployment in Syria

A no-fly zone, ground troops and special forces form the main planks of British-American contingency plans drawn up over recent months in anticipation of a Syrian chemical attack.

If a political decision is made to intervene, a limited no-fly zone could be imposed to stop the Syrian Air Force dropping bombs with chemical warheads.

Special operations forces would be deployed, backed by a substantial number of support troops — perhaps as many as 75,000 — to seize or safeguard the Syrian regime’s chemical weapons facilities.

“We have [US] special operations forces at the right posture, they don’t have to be sent,...
