Quoting: Texan Buckeye You mean to say they don't and that "Dallas" was just a tv show??? So disappointed! But we are, my friend, we are! And it is all subsidized by our communist government! ;) If you could only see our little house! It's old and needs LOTS of love(elbow grease, hard work, and MONEY...lots and lots of it!!), but it's ours and I wouldn't trade it for all the high priced McMansions here! We've been fixing and replacing since we moved in and I doubt it will ever be the way it should be. :( It's been 20 years since we lived in Holland, but I'll never believe it's gotten THAT bad. I truly hope not. When I remember all of the good people I knew, I have to hope they haven't changed that much. When I moved away from my little home town over 30 years ago, I hated to leave. Now, every time I go back, it's a different place. New faces, new everything. I suppose the Holland I knew is something like that. Our family, for one, will always have a special place in our heart for the Netherlands and the Dutch people. |

Quoting: ^àTOn^ I also met very intelligent people with great knowledge, understanding and curiosity. I can underscore that point 3 and your "I also" point. A couple of years ago I was approached by an American citizen, who said he was so sorry that we in Europe were so suffering under communist rule and about all our poverty. When I explained to him that we were not, I was informed that I of course had to say that, otherwise I would end up in a camp. When I confronted him with the fact that Holland (where I live) is member of NATO, he replied that I was lying. NATO was only the USA, Canada and England. All the rest of Europe was under Moscow. Sending him to the NATO website did not help. He also did not understand that we have internet here (we have one the fast systems in the world), even though he was writing to me via that internet. I use 50MB download 5 MB upload / fastest connection on my cable network is 160/50MB. About cars. When I asked him where all those Mercedeses, VW's and BMW's came from, he said "The USA". "And where do you think these companies have their headquarters?" "In the USA." Your "car" experience was also experienced, but now in television. Another person, also from the USA, said he was sorry we didn't have television here. When I told him that Sweden, Denmark and Holland were 1, 2 and 3 on the world's most densely cable networks, he simply refused to accept that. Had he ever heard of the BBC? Yes, he had. That was an American radio station in WW2. USA, don't be frightened, but there is a whole world on the other side of the oceans, and on many points we are WAY ahead of you! Did you know that the machines that make the chips for Intel are made in The Netherlands? O, btw, we don't sit all day with our fingers in the levee (that too was an American invention - Mary Mapes Dodge 1831 - 1905), and we don't wear wooden shoes anymore. Yesterday we discovered leather. I hope the USA will have a long life. Its citizens give us so much joy! ;) Windmill and Aton, I fully believe the conversations you had with Americans. Everyone in the States have had similar conversations, if they're being honest. Having said that, my family lived in the Netherlands for 5 years. I can match all of your stories with similar ones from Europeans. I think it's a mistake to form opinions of an entire nation or race because of a few people. I don't think all Dutch people are idiots because they thought all people in Texas live on ranches like the actors in Dallas. I wish!LOL Be careful with the brush you are painting people with, especially these days. That's what TPTB want you to do. There are good and bad people EVERYWHERE and to forget that, is a huge mistake. We are all individuals that happen to live where we do. We are NOT our governments, we are ALL pawns of them though. I guess I've just read/heard too much "anyone" bashing lately everywhere. Even in my po-dunk little town. I'm just running out of patience lately. I have to admit, I'm guilty of laughing at the idiots, too. Anyone watch Jay Leno's bit of Jaywalking? Sad and funny at the same time. |

Quoting: DarbyDoom In every direction Israeli military planners look, new threats are emerging in varying degrees. On the Lebanese border, Hezbollah is constructing sophisticated subterranean rocket-launching sites and command and control centers. Ground forces will be required to take out these underground facilities in any future confrontation. In the Sinai Peninsula and Syria, al-Qaida-inspired groups are mushrooming. In Gaza, Hamas together with Islamic Jihad and a host of smaller Palestinian jihadi organizations have built a heavily armed Islamist base which is on a long-term collision course with Israel. Beyond the growing guerrilla-terrorist challenge, the IDF may yet have to quickly enter Syria to neutralize the threat of loose and mobile chemical weapons. And, of course, any strike on Iran’s nuclear weapons program will almost certainly set off a regional conflict. These developments are what led Deputy Chief of Staff Maj.-Gen. Yair Naveh to warn in mid-October that for the first time in years, Israel must be ready for unexpected security developments on multiple fronts. OT - Old Topic; New Article... Will an Israeli strike on Iran come from Azerbaijan? According to intelligence officials, Iran’s security services have concluded that Azerbaijan, its Muslim neighbor to the north, has been enlisted by Israel in a campaign of cyber attacks, assassinations and detailed military planning aimed at destabilizing and ultimately destroying Tehran’s nuclear research program. That Iranian perspective, described by a range of current and former US intelligence officials who asked that their names remain confidential, has led to a crackdown on Iran’s sizeable ethnic Azeri minority and the launch of an Iranian counter espionage offensive to destabilize the government of President Ilham Aliev. Ethnic Azeris are Iran’s largest minority group, comprising about 16 percent of the population, mostly clustered along the northern border and in Tehran. . . [link to www.globalpost.com] |

Ajax has won the Europa cup 1 many times on those wooden shoes (Feyenoord and PSV each one time), and the national soccer team was European champion in 1988 and ended 2nd 3 times in the world championships in Germany (1974) Argentina (1978) and recently in South Africa (2010). Not bad for a team on wooden shoes. At the moment a new team is being built that will play on soft wooden shoes! Development never stops, you know. |

Here's another (front-page) article with large pic of the tanks... [link to www.haaretz.com] Three Syrian tanks on Saturday crossed the demilitarized border in the Golan Heights, only several kilometers away from the Israeli border. The tanks entered the buffer zone on Saturday afternoon, when Israel Defense Forces soldiers identified the Syrian tanks near Beer Ajam village in the Syrian-controlled central Golan Heights. Following the unusual incident, the IDF heightened its alert level in the area and lodged a complaint with the United Nations. The fighting in Syria has recently started approaching closer to the Israeli border. |
