Real risk of escalation beyond the borders and unless they ended up toppling Hamas (which IMO would require a reoccupation) not sure what the upside to Israel would be other than temporarily taking Hamas out of action until they figured out a way to re-arm. |

Israel accelerated its air offensive in the Gaza Strip overnight into early Saturday and destroyed the offices of Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, in what appeared to be an intensifying focus on targeting sites connected to — and leaders of — the militant Islamist movement that rules the coastal territory. The strikes slowed during the day, as Gaza militants continued to lob rockets across the border into southern Israel. Just before sundown, Hamas said it had shot an Iranian-made Fajr-5 rocket at Tel Aviv, and air raid sirens sounded in the city for the third day in a row. The Israeli military said its newly deployed missile defense battery intercepted the rocket before it landed in the populous coastal city. Israel offered a brief truce while Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil visited Gaza Friday, but it crumbled quickly as Gaza continued to launch rockets across the border and Israel retaliated with airstrikes. Haniyeh’s offices, where he met Friday morning with Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil, were reduced to a mound of concrete rubble, in one of what the Israeli military said were 200 airstrikes overnight. The bombing preceded the arrival Saturday morning of a large Tunisian delegation that includes the foreign minister. [link to www.washingtonpost.com] AND - This guy's house destroyed... Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the faith: all know how to die but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome." I dislike extremism. And what they do in the arab world today is to teach and worship extremism: against women, jews, the west, all non believers. The arab, who killed here in France in Toulouse the jewish children in the school, had a brother. This brother said: "My mother taught me to hate the jews". You cannot live in peace with people like this, and we can not move on to annother stage of humanity with people like this. Obviously, it will need a big change in attitude among the arabs. Which will be done, but the price will be high. Anyways, thank Darby to respond to my thread. |
