Christians are stupid, braindead, brainwashed, silly, pathetic ass-holes who are hanging on to a hope of life eternal because they are too cowardly and have too much ego to admit they are simply mortals who will die and rot. They believe in stupid things that even children know aren't true, like talking snakes, and talking donkeys. If they don't wish to be laughed at and poked fun at, then they shouldn't believe such silly and immature and childish things. In the meantime, they take offense when people laugh at them but they should just GROW UP. Santa/God doesn't exist.

Atheists are people who want to be physical in a spiritual world, so they have to make up a set of fairy tales to substitute for a creator, but all they do is keep moving the creation event to a new location, from 'mud pools' to 'backs of crystals' to 'big bangs' to 'aliens'. In fact I've never seen Christians insult Atheists. They just talk about Jesus and issue their warning. But that is not an insult. So I never understand it, really.

That's silly. You clearly have a poor education. Religion is a gift. Currently in our civilization, we do not know how to use this gift but it does not mean that it is evil or corrupted. Power does not corrupt, weak man corrupts power.

You make a good point. I have noticed myself in my atheist stage that I had a bone to pick with believers, and it was completely unnecessary. A lot of atheists have a problem with how religious folk "impose" their beliefs on others without realizing they are doing the very same thing.

Also, and more interestingly, atheism is basically just the same as religion since god is the foundation and staple which the entire philosophy revolves around. Atheists believe in god just as anybody else does, as they spend just as much time thinking about god and discussing his/her existence. It is just a fancy word for "debate" in my opinion.

To answer the title of the thread:

Because people always respond most forcefully to ideas that are contrary to what they believe. At the same time they refuse to listen to opposing arguments fairly and will, without even knowing they are doing it, resist hearing that the contrary arguments exist.

It's why Democrats go after Republicans and vice versa even though the two sides are almost identical from any outside perspective.

Why members of two different sects of the same Church often hold the other in contempt, even though they hold beliefs so close to one another as to make argument ridiculous.

It isn't a sane thing, it's a flaw in our nature, designed to help hold groups together, not find the truth, or even the bast way of doing things.

It's also nearly impossible for people to break out of. It takes mental discipline to admit you may be doing such things and even more to see it and then change, being more fair and open minded.

But, honestly, that's why.

This isn't a call to ignore the other side, but one that says "Hey, give it all a chance and see if it makes sense, once you take the blinders off."

If you can't really and fully do that, then you are both normal and likely living with a lot of incorrect information and thought.

*Just to be clear, while the above is true, that doesn't mean I do it all the time either. I'm just like everyone else that way. I do try however.
