So he didn't really survive a 13K free fall. Probably his main or reserve was out but not fully deploying.

I was reading a world record book one day and saw the record for highest fall survived. It belonged to a flight attendant on a plane travelling at 35K, when it exploded and she fell and landed in a snow bank. Never actually researched it to see if it was true.

She fell inside a tail section, the actual one that shouldn't have survived but did was the tail gunner in a Lancaster bomber.
