Our ancestry is among the hunter/gatherers from the beginning. Once domestication of food sources began, it included both animals and plants. Cell Types Relative number and distribution of cell types, as well as structural specializations, are more important than overall length of the intestine to determining a typical diet. Dogs are typical carnivores, but their intestinal characteristics have more in common with omnivores. Wolves eat quite a lot of plant material. Fermenting Vats Nearly all plant eaters have fermenting vats (enlarged chambers where foods sits and microbes attack it). Ruminants like cattle and deer have forward sacs derived from remodeled esophagus and stomach. Horses, rhinos, and colobine monkeys have posterior, hindgut sacs. Humans have no such specializations. Jaws Although evidence on the structure and function of human hands and jaws, behavior, and evolutionary history also either support an omnivorous diet or fail to support strict vegetarianism, the best evidence comes from our teeth. The short canines in humans are a functional consequence of the enlarged cranium and associated reduction of the size of the jaws. In primates, canines function as both defense weapons and visual threat devices. Interestingly, the primates with the largest canines (gorillas and gelada baboons) both have basically vegetarian diets. In archeological sites, broken human molars are most often confused with broken premolars and molars of pigs, a classic omnivore. On the other hand, some herbivores have well-developed incisors that are often mistaken for those of human teeth when found in archeological excavations. Salivary Glands These indicate we could be omnivores. Saliva and urine data vary, depending on diet, not taxonomic group. Intestines Intestinal absorption is a surface area, not linear problem. Dogs (which are carnivores) have intestinal specializations more characteristic of omnivores than carnivores such as cats. The relative number of crypts and cell types is a better indication of diet than simple length. We are intermediate between the two groups. Conclusion Humans are classic examples of omnivores in all relevant anatomical traits. There is no basis in anatomy or physiology for the assumption that humans are pre-adapted to the vegetarian diet. For that reason, the best arguments in support of a meat-free diet remain ecological, ethical, and health concerns. Last Edited by Tard on 09/02/2012 11:01 AM |

Comparing eating plants to eating animals is totally nonsensical. If you prune a plant properly it will grow bigger, stronger and healthier than before, it can prolong its life, and help it propagate itself better. What would happen if you tried to cut bits off an animal? It may bleed to death, and unless you're a certified vivisectionist in a lab, you're probably gonna get arrested for cruelty, and rightly so. If you take a fruit, or piece of veg, like a carrot top, and remove it from the main body, you can grow a new plant(amazing really) Try cutting off a bit of an animal and burying it. (don't actually try, you'll probably get arrested) See the new animal growing happily there, right alongside the healthy parent animal? No, you don't. You have a right to eat what you like, nobody can tell you what to eat. Stick up for your rights by all means, but stop using this stupid comparison because it makes you look like a fool. It's so far removed from the concept of "natural" that its unrecognizable. There was a thread a while back about whether people would eat "lab grown meat" and most were horribly disgusted at the prospect due to its unnatural creation. Intensive farming is just as unnatural, what you're eating just barely qualifies. as meat. Unnaturally conceived, raised, fed, in unnatural conditions, filled with stress and disease. Truly disgusting. Surely everyone wants to eat CLEAN food. Obviously there are some of the same issues with regards to agriculture. Reminds me of Idiocracy, pouring "brawndo" onto the crops instead of water and wondering why they don't grow, and carry on regardless. It's madness. Eat clean and ethical, whatever your diet. I understand that other people advocating a healthier lifestyle threatens your ability to eat dead animals, but please understand as they know not what they do. You are correct sir, there is no difference between plant & animal life. A dog is the same as an apple. A kitten and an avocado, different you might think but they are one and the same. A monkey and a carrot, who the fuck cares about minute differences... it's all living stuff that's fair game for my tummay. When I'm hungry, philosophy and ethics are out the window. I will eat whatever the fuck I want and I applaud you sir for pointing out what's missing in this debate. Plants & animals are the same. |

Quoting: MrFlibble Could never go back to eating dead flesh. Yuck. I haven't eaten it in the same amount of time, my health is excellent, look a lot younger than I really am too. Best decision I ever made. I've noticed how much younger I look in comparison to other people my age too. People generally assume I'm around 20/21. Most other 22-27 year olds look what I would think to be 30-35, while my face has no lines, no double chin or any wrinkling around the eyes. My hair is really thick and my skin is clear. I owe it in part to my dietary lifestyle and not smoking and only drinking on occasion. Quoting: Empath 15322038 The meat industry is a horrible evil!!! No one should be eating meat especially if one believes in God.. While I agree that the meat industry could be better, I think your opinion that belief in God equates to being a vegetarian is ludicrous. I am remembering a story I heard about Christ taking a basket of fish and multiplying it. Nature also provides ample evidence that genetically we are omnivores-- [link to www.saburchill.com] [link to www.ivu.org] Also, plants have consciousness and so the notion that eating them is superior to eating another kind of consciousness is merely denial of your own nature. [link to www.britannica.com] Nature being what it is, and the food chain being what it is, I doubt you could convince a bear or a shark not to eat a human if it is hungry, and a human easy prey. Likewise, I will not pass up a good steak if I am hungry and the vegetarians have eaten up all the salad and hummus~! If your intent is to get people to watch the movie, "Earthlings", consider editing out the notion that God will hate you if you eat a hamburger... "EARTHLINGS is an award-winning documentary film about the suffering of animals for food, fashion, pets, entertainment and medical research. Considered the most persuasive documentary ever made, EARTHLINGS is nicknamed “the Vegan maker” for its sensitive footage shot at animal shelters, pet stores, puppy mills, factory farms, slaughterhouses, the leather and fur trades, sporting events, circuses and research labs." Its not about eating meat...but how to do it humanely. |
