How Come Oceanic Buoys Don't Go Into Event Mode During Hurricanes?
I watch NOAA on a regular basis to see which buoys are in event mode. Yet...with nearly 100 active working buoys in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico...not a single buoy went into event mode as storms passed over them. Swells up to 100 feet and immense pressure passes over these buoys...why aren't they registering the water level changes? I've seen many buoys go into event mode with just a foot or two of changes in elevation. How come they don't go into event mode when the sea swells so heavily with these massive storms?

perhaps there is some remote ability to deactivate them? But...the buoys register as red on NOAA's map when they're not actively reporting...turned off.

Perhaps the anchor on the buoy does the scince work...and the part above the water is just the transmitter? So...even a big storm wouldnt cause the buoy to register. If the sea bottom rises maybe thats when the buoy registers?
