The guard was right - the woman shouldn't have stolen. What are they supposed to do, just let her run away? We all end up paying a lot more for our products because of people like her, who don't pay anything for their products.

BS to all you just said, not only is it insured but it is figured into the cost of doing business.

No wonder you all cant wait to kill each other with propaganda like this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23121051

Oh, it's insured so it's okay. The big, bad insurance company will pay. And who do you think pays huge premiums due to theft? Companies like Kohl's. Who passes if off to the consumer? Kohl's. Due to theft, security has to be hired, security cameras have to be installed. And if these people didn't walk off the street as if free merchandise is their right, it wouldn't have to be figured into the cost of doing business. Tens of BILLIONS are lost to thieves in retail every year. That's a pretty big cost of doing business.

The paying more for products thing is 100% bullshit.
They do it to make an example so it deters others.
And they're actually ordered to do it by the government because they claim all theft as a loss off their taxes (it costs them nothing).
And obviously this gives to the government less taxes so the government tells them to actively do something about it.
It doesn't drive up the price of anything it simply gives the government less tax revenue.

Its not insured to insure something like 1000 DVD players in retail chains from theft would cost more than the DVD players.

How much it cost each and every consumer. This is from 2010. So it's probably more now.

Everyone wants to play "cop" now it seems
 Quoting: natasha77

Fucking hate cops...

And before some dumb fuck says "Well next time you're in trouble don't call them" Shut the fuck up..

Everytime I've called the cops the stupid fucks show up 30 minutes later after everyone actually needs them. Not only that but they routinely take a situation and make it 10 times worse.

Cops aren't good for a god damn thing, they don't "Serve and protect" and are becoming like the SS in this country...

Time we did something about them..

So im driving down the street and see a struggle, I did a you turn and pulled up and ask if anybody needed any help. I did not know what was going on, but the woman was crying for help and two guys were holding her down, in a fierce battle. I thought the woman was on drugs, but apparently the woman had stolen a whole basket full of stuff.
I thought security guards were not allowed to use force? Security told me they were defending themselves! then I asked the officer that responded to the scene and he replied that it is KOHLS policy and that he wished more people were like that? Then the officer said thet the woman should not have stolen?

I worked Loss Prevention for a year at a Target store back when I was finishing up my degree.... We were supposed to stop and restrain anyone we suspected of shoplifting as they were attempting to exit the store.... Sometimes the shoplifters would try and flee and we would have to tackle/bring down/restrain them as best we could.... Usually it involved tackling the individual and handcuffing him to bring him back to the security office, upon which the individual would be handcuffed to a security bench and we'd wait for the police to arrive.

Take em down if they are stealing? YES!!

Part of their sentence should be working a chain gang in the parking lot of store they stole from ... breaking rocks. Truck in the rocks, truck out the gravel. Instead of "time" the sentence should be Tons of Rocks Broken down to a certain size!! (based upon the age/weight/fitness level of the offender.)

A few days of that ... or weeks if they are lazy shits ... and they might think twice before stealing again.

I don't buy the home protection analogy. The corporation is not your home, and they don't pay people enough to put themselves at risk for stolen chinese slave goods. Then you add it the common sense liability problem that someone else in this thread already raised...store security shouldn't play judge and executioner for thieves.

Some stores are allowed to use force when stopping people who have stolen. This usually means to pin down and detain till the cops get there. I see no problem with that. If anyone stole from me I would run them down.

I am not the Kohl's type of person.

But I will have to join in for a "Kohl's Appreciation Day"

I would even volunteer for security.

Would something like this happen at Nordstroms? Or is there too many Lawyers hanging arround.

Look what I found, [link to www.indeed.com]

Looks like Kohls has LP Issues after all.

"The problem with loss prevention officers is that they are not at all police officers and do not have the power of arrest. Most are not trained enough to even make a decision based on what they have observed, or what they think they have observed. all it takes is one mistake and its law suit time. I think that instead of being hidden in the shadows and behind a camera,or questioning employees about other employees and putting on that (look at me im LP.)
Officer pressence is the best way to stop someone from steeling.
let people know you are there. observe and assist. Yea you need the folks on the cameras and your investigaters, but most of all you need to be known. If the bad guys say, I go there im going to get caught. Then you have succeeded.
Good luck and be careful. and remember it's not worth getting killed or suid over an item that the stoor just writes off.
do your job and be sure."

"does kohls have security cameras in the lossprevention office?? i shoplifted and they took me in the office.. i gave the stuff back and tried to leave the office and the loss prevention lady attacked me and i am 4 months pregnat... is there cameras in that office???"

"no there is no cameras,,but you can bring them to court they cannot touch you for no reason unless you touched them first otherwise thats a good lawsuit for you,, specially if your pregnant,,i would take that case in a heartbeat."

Wow! It amazes me that the corporations have people willing to risk life, limb and property for their insured goods.
This is pure proof of the slave mentality the corporations have been able to garner from their employees.
These employees are probable making minimum wage to protect the master's goods.
I don't condone theft, but I have a problem with regular folk who are ready to become vigilantes to protect someone else's money.
I've seen these 'in-store' security people use excessive force to bring people down. I wonder whether these people know they are liable, if many of these folk wise up and decide to sue them.
Trust me, they are not bringing down white female shoplifters (the most common shop lifter) in Beverly Hills, as they have lawyers and clout.
The oficer's response is already under the presumption of guilt. I'm no bleeding heart, but I found that desperate people do desperate things. We sometime have to walk a mile in their shoes to understand what lead to such an act.

Let he, who is without sin, cast the fist stone...

Don't worry about master, he probably didn't lose a thing. I'm certainly not willing to get hurt, or even die for his goods.

Re: KOHLS Security authorized to use Force!
When I was working Loss Prevention at a Target store in MD, I observed a man remove one of those $150 Texas Instruments graphing calculators off the sales floor. He actually cut the item off the shelf as it was secured with one of those security devices on the item rack.... I was watching him from a rotatable camera from our security office.... He walked towards the front of the store and stopped in the greeting card aisle and pulled out his razor blade and tried to cut away at the packaging. He failed and proceeded to the front of the store where he took the item and tried to walk out the entrance to the store (going through the wrong doors). He set off the EAS monitors and left the store. I wasn't permitted to apprehend him (nor would I have tired) because I saw he has a razor blade (weapon) on him.... I called the local PD and they arrived in the area and located him on a street corner nearby with the merchandise in his possession. He was arrested and I provided a statement for the police report. We had him on camera removing the item from the sales floor and then proceeding to leave the store without paying for the item and walking away with the item in his possession.

Here's the funny thing.... 2-3 years later I had moved away and was living in a different part of the country when I got a call from a lawyer representing the Target Corporation. They said a man had filed a suit against the Target Corporation for wrongful detainment/imprisonment and discrimination. It was this same fucker! He tried to file a frivelous lawsuit against Target. Target asked me to return to Maryland to testify about the incident because they were going to fight it. The lawyer told me that the individual had a history of filing frivelous lawsuits against local corporations, looking for a quick payday from a settlement from these corporations looking to avoid litigation costs. I was compensated for my expenses and loss of work time but I had to travel back to Maryland to appear in court before a judge and walk the judge through the surveillance video showing that the man stole the item and was never detained within the store or by any Target employees... He was arrested by local PD on a public street corner with stolen merchandise in his hand! The plaintiff and his lawyer had absolutely no argument or means for cross examining my testimony and Target's defense was an open & shut case. The Judge was incensed by the foolishness of the plaintiff and ripped both the individual and his lawyer for wasting the judicial system's time with their lawsuit. In the end the shoplifter and his attorney had their case denied and were ordered to pay Target's litigation fees for having to fight he lawsuit. Justice served!
