Re: why aren't we planting more fruit trees? are we stupid?
i have a garden, and we planted fruit trees this summer. The thing about fruit trees (in Michigan), they have to be watched everyday or you will get an infestation from a moth or a disease from the soil and you have to spray appropriately at certain times to keep this problem from ruining the tree and ruining the fruit. You also can't spray at a certain time as to not kill the bee's that will pollinate your blossoms.

Fruit trees aren't easy.

I could see (maybe) smaller villages planting fruit trees in areas, but you'd have to have a budget for the upkeep of spraying, pruning, watering them. Also someone would have to pick up the spoiled fruit that dropped on the ground, because you don't want to mow over that or have spoiled food all over play areas and dropping onto your parked cars.

It is a little more difficult a plan to plant trees in public area's then just plopping the seed into the ground.

Then you got to think about the teenagers and hoodlums who would use apples as a bombs, and start throwing them at people or cars....

we are surrounded by an enormous "salad bowl" of edible plants
which we are too stupid to harvest....learn to identify them and eat healthily for free
and yes..plant fruit trees...there are some streets and roundabouts in UK planted with the veg we know and love..they are free to harvest and no one has yet abused it to my knowledge..............just great

Re: why aren't we planting more fruit trees? are we stupid?
My late grandpa told me stories of how fruit trees used to thrive without all the help. It was when pesticides and such were introduced that they could no longer do it on their own as the pests had strengthened for the resistance.

It is sad. The trees he used to be able to pick a peach from, growing unpurposefully, becoming infested, tainted.

if we just planted more fruit bearing trees in streets/sidewalks/parks/etc ...

if there were strawberries, cherries, lettuce, in abundance everywhere ...

we probably don't even have to work.

Food production has never been a problem. Control of all the land by the greedy is the problem. If fruit trees grew near every street we could end starvation. But we are slaves because the land lords don't plant.

It happens locally-there's a small band of guerilla gardeners who plant fruit trees etc. on abandoned or empty sections.

And a local google map for Urban Foraging showing areas where fruit, nuts, berries and wild herbs grow.

Re: why aren't we planting more fruit trees? are we stupid?
OP, all that would happen is that some enterprising individual would come along and pick the trees as soon as the fruit was ripe and then set up a stand and sell it. So, the next guy would pick the fruit earlier, before the first guy got to it, and so on and so on until you had a bunch of bare trees and a bunch of stands set up with a bunch of dorks selling unrippened fruit. Then, likely, the people would petition the government to guard and monitor the trees, come up with stringent regulations for who had access to them, etc. Likely the pols would grant themselves and their cronies first access to the fruit and the people that these trees were supposed to feed would get what was left after TPTB had taken all the best for themselves.

You see, it is always human nature that gets in the way of these grand Utopian visions. Thread fail!

Re: why aren't we planting more fruit trees? are we stupid?
I purchased a home in Los Angeles a few years back. I have about a 1/2 acre and quickly began planting a small orchard. I also planted lettuce as well as other vegetables.

I planted a butterfly garden and had so many beautiful butterflies. I had bees make a hive in one of my trees. I was so happy to have my own beehive except, the bees are now killing a 50 year old olive tree. I also built a small waterfall so I could attract birds, I now need to fight green algae and of course thristy coyotes. I built a clever bird feeder so I could protect the doves I feed without witnessing the horror of a falcon or hawk massacring the flock of doves I was trying to feed. Unfortunately birds begin to rely on you so it becomes a duty to feed them each day

What I have learned, fruit trees are messy and not that easy to grow. Fruit trees attract pests, lots of pests. Rodents love fruit trees, coyotes (who would of thought?) love fruit trees. Coyotes have eaten a couple of my pets. Oh, and the birds love to eat the fruit even though I spend a stupid amount each month on bird and squirrel food. Did mention how pesky squirrels can become when they eat your fruit?

I planted grape vines which take a lot of care. I also planted berries which turned out to be a lot of trouble for only a handful of berries each year. Did I mention how expensive it is to water enough plants and trees to feed even a small family?

The biggest problem so far have been insects. Do I go natural or just spray the little demons that it seems I need to fight daily? As for my lettuce, my guard dog hikes his leg everywhere so I no longer tend to the lettuce patch, I won't eat that lettuce.

I now know how damn hard it is to grow your own food. Farmers should
be paid more than our stupid ass socialist loving public school teachers. I
have also learned it is so much cheaper and easier to pick up a few
apples and oranges at the local market. I will keep growing what I can as well as continue to learn how to grow my own food but, I now
know growing your own food is a lot more work than most would imagine.
I actually envy the homes with small tidy yards because I know they have
time to enjoy their weekend

Farmers are now my heroes

You plant so many trees there is enough for everyone. If upgraded from lawns to food forests in the USA alone there would be enough food for the whole population. What you say it would take a lot of people to take care of it? Last I remember we have a lot of people unemployed. We could solve unemployment and feed people at the same time. Start your own garden and food forest. It has the added bennefit that you eat better and pay less for your own food. Also the governments do not tax the food you grow for yourself. Another added bonus. Once taxes are reduced we have less government. A win-win for the people.

Just finished my 16x16 fenced in raised bed gardens, and back in march of this year i planted 8 organic fruit and nut trees and bushes. I feel ya on this one. On top of the monetary and nutrition value to growing your own food, it is so rewarding to take one seed from one fruit and watch it grow and blossom into another tree/plant!

Yes, and I am learning from the nearby state university arborist I can use this special worm casing stuff to fight this new white fly infestation I've just discovered. If I spray, I risk killing the bees and I can't eat the nearby fruit if I use spray. It's damn hard to grow your own food. My point, anyone thinking you can just toss about a handful of seeds is being silly. Farming, even caring for one fruit tree is not for sissies.

You definately need to learn gardening but unless people try we will not have any gardeners or farmers. Fail and fail again. Fail miserably and then you will learn to garden even better. That is the only way to learn. We could have whole service sectors of specialist who could help you tend your garden and help solve problem like you are having. Why do we need so many lawn care specialist poisoning our environment just to have a green lawn. How about a person that uses natural techniques to help you grow your own food?
