Aussie Govt gives green light for online spying
Our corrupt socialist left govt has given the green light for legislation to proceed requiring ISP's to keep customers online data for 2 years - just in case the cops need it to prosecute your ass.

Guess who's paying for it? .........

Nicola Roxon backflip gives green light for online spying

ATTORNEY-General Nicola Roxon has reversed her position on online spy laws today, backing plans for ISPs to store user data for up to two years.

In a speech at the Security Government conference in Canberra, Ms Roxon said that law enforcement authorities needed to be able to collect user data in order to be better able to target criminals.

"Many investigations require law enforcement to build a picture of criminal activity over a period of time," Ms Roxon said.

"Without data retention, this capability will be lost.

"The intention behind the proposed reform is to allow law enforcement agencies to continue investigating crime in light of new technologies.

"The loss of this capability would be a major blow to our law enforcement agencies and to Australia's national security."

The Attorney -General's comments stand in stark contrast to reported comments earlier in the year where she doubted the effectiveness of the proposed measures.

I'd wager they've been doing it for 5-10 years already and this is just so they don't have to hide it anymore.

And I'd also wager it won't stay 2 years, they'll make it 3... then 5... then 10... then 20... then lifetime

I wonder how long it will take them to work up a search engine that they can apply to the masses of stored data ferreting out those who have visited gun sites, alternative media - even GLP.

This takes profiling to a whole new level

That technology is already fully developed. Just need to purchase it off Google, who have been doing it for nearly 15 years.

Privacy advocates and some people in the internet industry are today accusing the Federal Attorney General of proposing laws that they would only expect to see in a police state.

The Attorney General, Nicola Roxon, is making the case for a raft of new security measures which would see the internet browsing habits of all Australians logged.

Ms Roxon told a government security conference in Canberra that the controversial changes are necessary to bring law enforcement and intelligence agencies into the internet age.

Re: Aussie Govt gives green light for online spying
Forthright and upstanding pillar of OZ society, Nicola:

"Without data retention, this capability will be lost"

as apposed to her ealier comments:

"I'm not yet convinced that the cost and the return - the cost both to industry and the [privacy] cost to individuals - that we've made the case for what it is that people use in a way that benefits our national security,"

Why is it with these people. Just say: "We need to keep tabs on the herd and their hopes, dreams, desires, wants, their deepest personal thoughts so that I, Sheila or Nicola or whatever, and my accomplices Bruce and Chips here can use this info against them whenever we need to ensure our naional security which could be anything that threatens me and my gang of voyeurs."

Tust me, the OZ Regime are not doing this to keep the Proles safer - they just don't operate that way. The truth is behind the $'s. That info will be/has being put to some commercial use..you'll see.

Re: Aussie Govt gives green light for online spying
Check this out ..... Roxon's proposed laws are far more stringent than the European Union's Data Retention directive which requires ISP's to keep 6 months of data.

Roxon wants 2 years retention as well as allowing the police to commandeer the computer of an UNINVOLVED 3RD PARTY

From this source ....

[link to www.circleid.com]

If they became law, Ms Roxon's latest proposals would give Australia's intelligence agencies and law enforcement some of the greatest spy powers in the developed world. As well as storing web and telecommunications data (including data stored in the cloud and social networks) for two years, the proposed changes would also give authorities the right to commandeer the computer of an uninvolved third party if necessary to access a suspect's computer. If passed, these changes would be even more extreme than the European Union's controversial Data Retention Directive, which requires all data to be stored for six months. It follows attempts earlier this year by the UK and Canada to tighten up their online spy laws.
