I bet your son has a file sharing program like eDonkey, Kaza or some other reasonable facsimile that starts up automatically. These programs create share folders so other users that have the same program, can share files with each other worldwide.

I'm a tech.

His network card maybe faulty. Sometimes
they can go bad and just start emitting
noise all over the network and swamp it out. Electronics can be intermittent also so that is why it works sometimes.
If his network adapter is part of the motherboard then just get a $10 network card and plug it into one of the slots and plug your network cable into the new card. You can disable the motherboard lan in the bios if your comfortable working in there. Otherwise
it won't hurt to leave it enabled, especially for testing. Let me know if this works for you.

Are using Zone Alarm ?

Is the DSL connec'n to the modem USB ?

Your actually losing line sync to the modem that's all. It's a networking issue; but ZA is the worst prog' to use for firewall.

If the network cable is on the floor and the PC on a desk you may have an issue with the electrons going uphill. Coil the cable. It'll be an easier climb.

"ZA is the worst prog' to use for firewall."

Why is that? I've been using it a couple of years with no problem.

Octo, I think the Tech has a good idea.

hi Octo hugs

If the pc's OS is XP. Try restoring to an prior date when everything was working fine. That should fix the problem.

Found in Programs then Accessories, System Tools then Restore.

Actually Cassie that's not a good idea, rollback is a bad feature in XP and doesn't magically fix everything - rollback causes all sorts of probs' more than it fixes. Sorry. It's another useless MS feature that causes more heartache than can be imagined.

Your son is right, Octo.

Its the proxy, that is sometimes included, in these antispyware packages.

They proxy part of your i.p., to them and this sometimes causes conflicts.

Find one real good antispyware programs and stick to this.

People that hack, invade, into other people's systems, have something basically wrong with them..

Sorry D

I was wondering about the network card/line myself. Since you don't use a central server and all go through a single router, it shouldn't drop out out like that unless something is screaming. If he plays games online, he may have been tagged for an IRC attack flooding your router as well.

Re: SOS...---...PC help needed!
The problem is this:

Your machine is running Windows Firewall and your son's is not.

Or it could be that only one of those machines is running a software firewall.

You're behind a router. Most routers, by default, read the M.A.C. address on both machines and apportion packet control on a synchronous basis. If only one machine has a software firewall, you get netbios problems.

Solution: Install the SAME software firewall on both machines with EXACTLY the same newtwork settings OR make sure that NEITHER machines have one.

In addition, make sure that your network services for both machines are compatible (for XP and XP Pro).

Does your son have a firewall in his comp? if he does then take a look and see if there is anything that is sending lots and lots of data out and/or if there is like Kwazillion outgoing connections, then it's probably a trojan.

i have had few times trojan like that and my isp (elisa) shutdown my connection for several minutes.
