hi
NASA News Audio Live Streaming TODAY, 2 p.m. EST: NASA Hosts Media Teleconference on Asteroid Earth Flyby

NASA will hold a media teleconference today to discuss an asteroid 150-feet in diameter that will pass close, but safely, by Earth on Feb. 15. The flyby creates a unique opportunity for researchers to observe and learn more about asteroids.

The teleconference participants are:
--Lindley Johnson, program executive, Near-Earth Object (NEO) Observations Program, NASA Headquarters, Washington
--Timothy Spahr, director, Minor Planet Center, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, Mass.
--Donald Yeomans, manager, NEO Office, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, Calif.
--Amy Mainzer, principal investigator, NEOWISE observatory, JPL
--Edward Beshore, deputy principal investigator, Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer Asteroid Sample Return Mission, University of Arizona, Tucson

My forecasts are UTC time so we are just about to enter the next quake watch window:

Feb 14-15-16

There are only 6 NEOs approaching on the Feb 15 target date (usually look for 7+) but we also have 2012 DA14 coming closer than any other known asteroid of it's size.

quick question: Can the asteroid earthquake have any affect on earthquake activity? I am in Las Vegas and would really like some kind of video or hard evidence that proves so. Especially since there has been so many swarms recently.

This whole thread is about tracking how asteroids might influence quakes. One theory is on days when the count of NEOs approaching Earth is above 6 there is a higher chance of a significant quake. See most recent chart above and older charts too.

Re: May 5 target date for earthquake influenced by asteroids
Do the asteroids that make the closest approaches to Earth have an influence on earthquakes? For it's size, asteroid 2012 DA14 comes closer than other since we have developed the ability to spot them with telescopes.

This chart shows the last 18 asteroids the came .0035 AU or closer. If we targeted these approach dates for a 3 day quake window (target date plus or minus one day) here are the stats

18 target date windows
15 target date windows hit
11 target date hit exact date
3 Misses
83% hit rate

20 6.0+ quake hits within windows
14 6.3+ quake hits within windows

10 Target dates .0015 AU or less
9 Target dates .0015 AU or less hit
90% hit rate

6 Target dates less than .0015
6 Target dates less than .0015 hit (all 6.4+)
100% hit rate

Possible Seismic Activity on Asteroid 2012 DA14

Feb. 14, 2013: For eons, Earth has felt the tremors of asteroids striking our planet. From the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago to the felled forests around Tunguska in 1908, the space rocks keep coming.

This week, Earth strikes back. When asteroid 2012 DA14 makes a record close approach to our planet on Feb. 15th, the space rock could be the one feeling tremors.

New research by Richard Binzel, a professor of planetary science at MIT, suggests that many near-Earth asteroids experience a seismic jolt when they pass too close to our planet’s gravitational field.
...
Binzel first began to entertain the idea of asteroid-quakes a few years ago when he was pondering a mystery about near-Earth asteroids:
"As asteroids move through space, they slowly turn dark-red. This phenomenon, called 'space weathering', is caused by long exposure to cosmic rays and solar radiation. For decades, however, we have known about a handful of small asteroids that looked [light and fresh]; they were not space weathered."

How did this group of space rocks avoid space weathering? To solve the mystery, Binzel and colleagues calculated the asteroids' orbits and found a telling clue: They all had very close encounters with Earth in the past million years.

"We believe they were 'shaken up' by their encounters with Earth," he says. "Gravitational forces during the flybys can stretch, rattle, and torque these asteroids, causing dark, space-weathered material on the surface to be overturned, revealing the fresh stuff underneath."
...
"These asteroids experience [seismic activity] in the milli- to micro-g range," he says. "That might not sound like much, but remember these are small bodies. Gravity is not very strong, so just a little shaking or stretching goes a long way."

...

OK... NASA reports that a professor of planetary science at MIT has found a physical interaction between Earth and close approaching asteroids...

a reaction that shakes off their space dust...

The article also uses the term asteroid-quakes...

Is this effect gravitational or electrical? I say both.

Keep in mind "every action has an equal and opposite reaction"

That means if the Earth pulls or disrupts the calm on an asteroid...

then an asteroid can have a pull or disrupt calm conditions on Earth...

no matter how small or difficult to measure directly.

OP, I have a question. Do you think the St. Louis area will be hit with a quake soon? I was driving to work today and realized just how terrible our roads are, and how deadly it would be to end up under a bridge if a big one hit.

Thanks. Your research is very interesting and I hope someday you are taken seriously outside alternative news.

So would the 6.9 russia earthquake be considered the beginning as you have forecasted 14-15-16? Still quite a ways to go before the 16th.
It's a scary thought.

Keep up the good work. Someday your genius will be recognized :)

I think the 3 day window is prime to trigger tension release. So the first hit on Feb 14 could be it. But look at the rumbling after last two trigger dates of Jan 30 and Feb 06. We'll see soon. Then Feb 20 is ALMOST a target date.
