I can't imagine anyone was stupid enough to think that they could even get away with something like that nowadays. You can't sell unregistered cattle at cattle auctions... and you need proof of ownership to do so.

You could probably rustle one or two for personal use... such as breeding for personal consumption... but you would never be able to sell them. They'd trace the bloodline back to the original owners... and discover they were stolen. You'd be in deep shit.
