Man, she has balls of steel. She went back to the podium to keep the crowd calm to avoid any mob stampede out of there.

The shooter was franco it seems, speaking in french "les anglais souviens" or something to that affect...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23207636

No he said "The anglos are awakening". He's clearly crazy... They were celebrating the victory of the separatist party in Quebec and he tried to ruin it all.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1335128

I heard on CBC he made his statement in french. But like someone said many anglos speak pretty good french in Quebec, unlike their parents...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23207636

Yes what he said was in french with an english accent. (I translated in french...) He's a crazy bastard anyway. Nothing to do with an anglo vs french war....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1335128

Agreed, though your use of terms is debatable. In Canadian politics it is intermeshed with federal provincial "wars" and monarchist anglo and french separatist "wars", and hidtorical colonial disgust, and cultural differences, and typical Cdn identity malaise,,, and on and on...

This will be Canada's fourth real controversial political moment in modern times- note that they all center on Quebec:

-FLQ crisis of 1970s and the kidnapping death of Pierre Laporte.
-Oka Indian reserve native uprisingin Quebec.
-1980 and 1995 Quebec referendums (votes) on sovereignty and separation from the rest of Canada.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8829929

Everything new and shocking in Canada's political and social arenas occur in Quebec.

Except for the dead man and the other one critically injured, hopefully no one else died. There was about 1000 ppl gathered in the building (Metropolis club) and the shooter was 5 meters away from the prime minister. He also put fire to the Metropolis.

Crazy!!!!!!

There is alot of resentment for the laws that undermined the comfortable status quo of ordinary anglos in Quebec. At 50, he and his friends probably had alot of adjustments to make for which they never forgot or forgave. Check out her platform you'll see she has balls of steel.

She is an awful wretch and this definitely makes her victory bitter-sweet. But this just goes to show how much she has polarized Quebecers. Even the francos don't like her.

As an Anglo Quebecer having grown up in the Rene Levesque 70s in a politically active Liberal family, I could respect Levesque and often thought Canada could use a federal leader that sparked the passion in people like he did.
THIS WOMAN is pure HATRED.

...is what?

Its one thing to talk shit about quebecers, its another to try to assassinate their separatist prime minister, a few minutes after the election, in their own backyard. Its a minority government meaning that they could go back in election soon. With this event to flare up tensions, this could turn ugly fast and Canada could wake up missing a big chunk of land sooner than they thought.
