The quake was picked up by the seismos in Monroe, Louisiana.

(CNN) -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck off the coast of Costa Rica Wednesday, resulting in some damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) originally measured the quake at magnitude 7.9, but revised it downward to a magnitude 7.6.

The earthquake did not generate any aftershocks. There have been reports of some damage.

The epicenter was just six miles away from the city of Hojancha.

"It started out pretty mild, but then it really got going," said Bill Root, owner of a hotel in Samara, also near the epicenter. "It was a very strong earthquake. Everything was falling off the shelves and the ground was rolling."

Seismologists are analyzing whether todays Nicaya peninsula earthquake was the one “to expect”. Rember one of our earlier paragraphs were we wrote that the island was lifted today by 1 meter because it was pulled down during 60 years. Knowing all that, an earthquake is evident at some time, but today’s science cannot predict when earthquakes will happen and how strong they will be. Today’s earthquake is not a surprise but the strength of it certainly is. The lifting also suggests that today’s earthquake was a subduction earthquake. Subduction earthquakes are far less dangerous than transform earthquakes, but if you are living through it, it remains horrible.

That is what they do. They are computerized - info is relayed in fractions of seconds. It is not that it "felt" it in Louisiana. it is a computer measuring and calculating S and P waves data that it is receiving from other computerized sensors.

First there was 5.9 Santa Cruz Islands it's one side of Pacific plate, then 7.5 Costa Rica other side of the plate.
Hmmm... did Santa Cruz Islands had any aftershocks yet?

Ovsicori has reported a little while ago that 25 aftershocks have been recorded the first hour after the mainshock.

I don't see any atershocks for the magnitude 5.9 earthquake that hit the Santa Cruz Islands earlier today.

However, there was a magnitude 4.8-4.9 earthquake in the Santa Cruz Islands today that preceded the magnitude 5.9 earthquake that struck that same region.

The 4.8-4.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the Santa Cruz Islands struck about 13 hours ago today at 05:32:11 UTC.

On the very bottom of the page that YOU linked too, it clearly shows that you EDITED that very post, just minutes before you put your first post in this thread.

So, I was only asking...

What part of that post of yours, which you linked to, did you edit, 5 minutes before you posted here on this thread?

Here's a collection of news reports that are more detailed. The link that the reports originated from is given at the bottom of the list.

Following [According to] Red Cross Officials, two people dead in quake in Costa Rica. Dozen of peoples are having treatment in hospitals.

One women reported to be dead from a heart attack suffered during the earthquake. Around 30 people people reported to be injured. Injured people are having treatment currently at various clinics in Filadelfia, Guanacaste.

Roads leading in and out of Samara are reported to be blocked due to landslides. Costa Rica is prone to landslide disaster.

They are evacuating Jaco, Costa Rica and moving people away from the ocean as a precaution.

Situation is reported to be worse in Playas del Coco area. There is no electricity and water in this region. People of these coastal areas are still outside their house due to possible fear of Tsunami.

[According to] Javier Valverde , a Guanacaste resident : “Currently things are okay, it was very strong but the Nicoya gulf was mostly affected, therefore, the tsunami alert. I am currently in a hotel in Playa Langosta. Tourists are being taken to higher grounds, about at least 30 meters above sea level.

A bridge in Sarapiqui collapsed. Damage also reported in hospitals in Puntarenas and Heredia.

Several Office buildings in San Jose have been evacuated.

There is report of landslides around epicenter area. Note that Samar, the popular tourist beach is close to epicenter.

Minor damages are reported at the University of Costa Rica.

Local media in Costa Rica are calling this EQ, "the famous Nicoya earthquake everyone has been waiting for".

There are initial reports of some damage in the Central Valley where many homes suffered at least falling objects. There are evn reports of trees falling elsewhere.

Following [According to the] USGS PAGER MAP, very strong shaking of MMI VI will have [been] felt by the people of Hojancha, Nicoya, Nandayure, Santa Cruz, Samara and Belen. Strong to moderate shaking will have [been] felt by the people of San Jose, Masaya, Managua, Leon and David.

Felt reports are being received from wide across Costa Rica including Panama, Nicaragua and El Salvador.
