Could be Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS). I live near Erie, PA and a few smaller lakes have tons fish with this disease. I've seen carp covered with sores. Every so often, there are a lot of fish that wash up dead on Erie Peninsula beaches. I don't know about tens of thousands though. I remember as a kid going to the beaches and they were everywhere dead. It's quite alarming.
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3738979 Spoke too soon. Yes, VHS is a problem for Lake Erie. Here's some links: [ link to www.independentcollegian.com] [ link to www.lakescientist.com] [ link to www.dec.ny.gov] 2006 saw mass die-offs from VHS in Lake Erie, the St. Clair River, the Detroit River, and the St. Lawrence River, which connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.[17] VHS was further detected in the Niagara River, which connects Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.[25] It was also found in a walleye die-off in the landlocked inland Conesus Lake, the westernmost of the Finger Lakes in western New York state.[26] This was the first case in the region outside waters contiguously connected to the Great Lakes.
