Complete misinterpretation of the command.

It's ok to want things. It's NOT ok to covet. Covet is allowing your desire for things to override good moral behavior.

There is NOTHING wrong with acquiring wealth via hard work and thrifty living.

Take an example: You want a nice car...

Proper way:

Go out and work for it, save, be thrifty. Don't forget to tithe and help your less fortunate neighbors. In time, you'll have amassed enough wealth to buy that car...good for you!

Bad Way:

Take out a loan for the car. You're now in debt. You use money that could have gone to the less needy or your church to make the loan payments and cover the higher insurance costs. You've allowed your "need" to drive you into bad decisions.


Coveting can apply to many things...the famous story of coveting in the Old Testament involved adultery (coveting another man's women) and murder. That's the extreme end of things.

Now seeing someone with a nice car and thinking "I'd like one of those to, I'm going to start saving some money or take some extra hours at work to get one" is NOT sinful.
