Really mysterious. 2 little girls survived, one badly injured and one hid under the bodies of the 2 women? Wasnt found for hours after police arrived? Witness protection there for a start. Poor girls. Looks like a hit, the cyclist killed because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time maybe?

Three of the people killed in the French Alps were shot in the head in an execution style slaying, authorities said today.

However, detectives refused to speculate as to why the man and two women were targeted by gunmen. Officials said they did not want to speculate today as to any motive for the shooting.

Police sources told French news agency AFP that the father was Iraqi born Saad Al-Hilli, 50, who is thought to be secretary of an aerial photography company based in Swindon, Wiltshire.

The victims in the car had been hit by at least 15 bullets.

If it is a hit then it will be by a country which is friendly with France but not the UK. They could have shot this guy any time in the UK but they waited until he was in France. If they shot the right person that is.

Update: The Swedish Embassy have just confirmed that one of the women held a Swedish passport.

If he was based in Salisbury it would be doom time, if it was Warminster/Westbury it would be dodgy but Swindon is too far away.

I find something strange, on one hand it seems the work of a professional killer (bullets in the head, the car has not been "sprayed" by bullets, killer(s) without mercy) but on the other hand, sounds like amateur(s) : the girls are alive, the killing was on quite busy road (and there was a witness, the cyclist), and officals have noted "savagery" in the modus operandi, which not sticks with a cold blooded hitman..

So not a microbiologist then, that was my first thoughts.

Saad al-Hilli worked with the Iraqi nuclear program, according to this report.

Where did he travel before and after he was killed? The ITER facililty is in Cadarache, but the location of the shooting is closer to Geneva, Switzerland.
