Pressure in Mount Fuji is now higher than last eruption, warn experts

:mountFujisep6:

The pressure in Mount Fuji's magma chamber is now higher than it was in 1707, the last time the nearly 4,000-metre-high Japanese volcano erupted, causing volcanologists to speculate that a disaster is imminent.

The new readings, taken by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention, reveal that the pressure is at 1.6 megapascals, nearly 16 times the 0.1 megapascals it takes to trigger an eruption.

This, lead volcanologist on the case Eisuke Fujita told Kyodo News, is "not a small figure".

Researchers have speculated for some time that the volcano, located on Honshu Island 100km southwest of Tokyo, is overdue an eruption. In 2000 and 2001 a series of low-frequency earthquakes were recorded beneath the volcano, leading to widespread predictions of an imminent blow....

Mount Fuji 'under more pressure than last eruption'

Tectonic shifts triggered by last year's huge 9.0 magnitude undersea quake have left the chamber under 16 times the minimum pressure at which an eruption can occur, researchers said. Researchers at the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention studied the tectonic movements caused by the tsunami-triggering quake on March 11, 2011 and a magnitude 6.4 quake that rocked central Japan four days later, Kyodo News reported. They estimated that 1.6 megapascals of pressure, equivalent to atmospheric pressure of some 15.8 kilograms per square centimetre (226 pounds per square inch), was being exerted on the magma chamber.

So in 1707, was it a big one, like a doom explosion.

If not, nothing to see here folks

Maybe I'm missing something...but how would they have measured this in 1707, much less have a record of it that survived this long?

From Global Volcanism Program

The conical form of Fuji-san, Japan's highest and most noted volcano, belies its complex origin. The modern postglacial stratovolcano is constructed above a group of overlapping volcanoes, remnants of which form irregularities on Fuji's profile. Growth of the Younger Fuji volcano began with a period of voluminous lava flows from 11,000 to 8000 years before present (BP), accounting for four-fifths of the volume of the Younger Fuji volcano. Minor explosive eruptions dominated activity from 8000 to 4500 BP, with another period of major lava flows occurring from 4500 to 3000 BP. Subsequently, intermittent major explosive eruptions occurred, with subordinate lava flows and small pyroclastic flows. Summit eruptions dominated from 3000 to 2000 BP, after which flank vents were active. The extensive basaltic lava flows from the summit and some of the more than 100 flank cones and vents blocked drainages against the Tertiary Misaka Mountains on the north side of the volcano, forming the Fuji Five Lakes, popular resort destinations. The last confirmed eruption of this dominantly basaltic volcano in 1707 was Fuji's largest during historical time. It deposited ash on Edo (Tokyo) and formed a large new crater on the east flank.

The earthquake measuring device in the link was made by the Chinese in 132AD. I have actually seen one of these work in San Fansisco, CA it worked at a 1.0 EQ I think that is pretty good for those dumb Chinese people in 132AD........

My biggest fear is that Mt Fuji might erupt sideways like Mt St Helens did.

If it erupted sideways towards Tokyo (100 kms away), and the volcano caused a very large pyroclastic flow towards Tokyo it would be a massive disaster.

I hope it doesn't happen because the death toll would be huge.

Good find..Maybe a "Release of back pressure"
is needed for a "HAPPY ENDING" for this potential Doom. But really.. A Multi megaton explosion of Fuji would be disastrous to the surrounding area. What used to be farmland is now industrial areas.

The Hoei Eruption of Mount Fuji started on December 16, 1707 (23rd day of the 11th month of the year Hoei 4) and ended about January 1, 1708 (9th day of the 12th month of the year Hoei4) during the Edo period.

Although it brought no lava flow, the Hoei eruption released some 800 million cubic meters of volcanic ash, which spread over vast areas around the volcano, even reaching Edo almost 100 km away. Cinders and ash fell like rain in Izu, Kai, Sagami, and Musashi provinces. In Edo, the volcanic ash was several centimetres thick.

The eruption occurred on Mount Fuji's east–north-east flank and formed three new volcanic vents, named No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 Hoei vents. The catastrophe developed over the course of several days—an initial earthquake and explosion of cinders and ash was followed some days later with the more forceful ejections of rocks and stones.

Mount Fuji has not erupted since.

Yes it does look like it will be a big one, especially with those very high pressure measurements !

But, will it happen in our lifetime ? It waited 300 years, who's to say it won't wait another 30 or 40 ?

Basically what we know about volcanoes is exactly how much we now about earthquakes...which is squat !

If the current pressure is 16 times the minimum needed for an eruption to occur ... what is preventing the volcano from erupting? Especially since 16 times is a huge amount of pressure!

How would they know if the pressure is higher than it was in 1707? Was there even the ability to know that kind of thing back then?
