Abramoff Democrats
Posted 1/6/2006

Campaign Finance: Nearly all Senate Democrats took money steered their way by Jack Abramoff, and Hillary Clinton's fundraising committee has agreed to a $35,000 fine. Republicans aren't the problem. The system is.

It's absurdly hypocritical for Democrats to try to use the Abramoff scandal against Republicans. Any recent instance of Republicans playing fast and loose with campaign laws can be topped by a similar case on the part of prominent Democrats.

Sen. Clinton, for instance, was under investigation by the Federal Election Commission starting in 2001 for understating in-kind donations. Last week, The New York Sun reported that her "New York Senate 2000" fundraising organization conceded the falsity of its campaign filings and agreed to pay a penalty of tens of thousands of dollars for underreporting donations.

The in-kind contributions of shady entrepreneur Peter Paul, who was convicted of three drug and fraud felony counts in the 1970s and 1980s and has also admitted to stock manipulation, were understated in the committee's filings by nearly $722,000. Paul claims he spent nearly $2 million on an August 2000 celebrity concert at a Brentwood, Calif., estate for President and Mrs. Clinton.

Then there's Sen. Charles Schumer, head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) no less, who in 2003 quietly paid a $130,000 FEC fine, plus $120,000 in refunds to 77 donors, for violations by his 1998 campaign. But with a $26 million war chest and facing an unknown, cash-strapped GOP challenger, it was hardly a bump on the road in Schumer's 2004 re-election. He got 72% of New Yorkers' votes.

The DSCC and Hillary's campaign jointly set up the New York Senate 2000 committee for the express purpose of bypassing the $2,000 limit on contributions from individuals. It's that phony limit that empowers the likes of Abramoff, whose clients and associates gave Sen. John Kerry close to $100,000, according to the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid apparently got nearly $70,000 from Abramoff sources, and Schumer himself benefited to the tune of nearly $30,000. All but five Democratic senators have taken Abramoff cash, says the NRSC.

And how about Charles Rangel, ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, who took $36,000 from Abramoff's Indian clients, then gave the New York Post a Marx Brothers skit in response: "I don't know Abramoff, have never met Abramoff and have never accepted a political contribution from Abramoff. But if I do find that any contribution I have received was made at the behest of Abramoff, I will return it."

Abramoff — and all the sleazy middlemen who may never be caught — are byproducts of the misguided post-Watergate campaign reforms that actually encourage political money laundering. We need an end to individual contribution limits and to stealthy political action committees. We also need full and immediate transparency regarding those who give — personal details, occupation, etc.

Only a system based on public visibility will prevent future Abramoffs — and make sure those we elect aren't being bought off.

You can run your mouth, and run from reality all you want, but the truth comes out in the end.

Just what is this about?

"Hillary Clinton's fundraising committee has agreed to a $35,000 fine."

People don't end up paying tens of thousands of dollars because they are light beings.

Reader's Viewpoint: Democrats also received donations (more than $1.5 million) from Abramoff
To the Editor:

I realize that your story “No thanks, Jack” is about three Ohio Republican lawmakers, but if you ever want to be “fair and balanced,” you might want to consider the following list of Democrats who have taken money from Jack Abramoff, according to Federal Elections Commission records.

Jack A. Abramoff (born February 28, 1959) is a lobbyist who, on January 3, 2006, pled guilty to three criminal felony counts in federal court[1] and, on January 4, 2006, pled guilty in a separate matter to two criminal felony counts in a different federal court.[2]

***Abramoff is a central figure in a series of high-profile political scandals directly linked to over 200 Republican members of Congress.***

***Abramoff has never directly contributed any money to Democrats. [3] Some of Abramoff's clients have contributed money to some Democrats, however, there is no evidence that these independent contributions were linked to any corruption. For more information, see Jack Abramoff lobbying and corruption scandal.

Re: What Do Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, And Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid Have In Common?
The Big Fix 2006 : Is Abramoff Getting Away with MURDER?

Tom DeLay's on trial, Randy Cunningham's going to jail, the Republican Party is mired in corruption and cronyism, Sun Cruz Casino “Mob Boy” Adam Kidan's already cut a deal, and Jack Abramoff’s plea agreement with federal prosecutors is expected to result in the biggest Congressional housecleaning in decades…

Yet, appearances to the contrary, “The Big Fix 2006” may already be in on the Republican big money scandals.

The show may be over before it began.

Despite the drumbeat of new revelations (like the Desperate Housewives of Congressional Republicans pulling down six-figure incomes for duties which are the very definition of ‘vague’), in the silent newsnights before Christmas it began to become apparent that once again something was going horribly, terribly, wrong…

The sight of neo-con greedheads and faux Christian leaders littering the landscape like recently-sodomized sugar plum fairies (paging Ralph Reed, white courtesy phone) may everywhere be warming the hearts of men and women of good will.

But Federal prosecutors aren’t just doling out justice. They appear to be putting a cover-up in place.

“Casino Jack” Abramoff and minion Adam Kidan just may be about to get away with murder.

Maybe it was all Little Tony's idea...d'ya think?
Anyone doubting this assertion should perform this simple thought experiment:

“You’ve just bought a life insurance policy for $10 million on your spouse, who is then shot three times at close range with hollow point rounds by people later identified as Gambino hit men by authorities, who—drat the luck— have recently cashed big checks from you…

Which should you now be doing:

A. Planning a new life of leisure with your big insurance settlement? Or:

B. Looking to dye your hair red and drive at your earliest convenience across the Mexican border in a white Bronco?

Alas for America, both Abramoff and Kidan appear to be availing themselves of a third alternative, one made possible by an unacknowledged fact of American life:

“Being connected means never having to say your sorry.”

Writing a quarter million dollars worth of checks (for no discernible purpose) to Mafia hit men who are later charged with the murder of the check-writer’s biggest enemy in the whole damn world is just another in a long line of "freak coincidences" in South Florida, a place where things have always been a little… different.

'Big Tony' Moscatiello and two second-rate mobsters were charged with the murder of Sun Cruz Casino magnate Gus Boulis in September. It is a case in which Jack Abramoff and his henchman Adam Kidan both have massive and totally obvious criminal exposure.

Without an agreement to shield them from prosecution in the Boulis murder, neither man would seem to have any reason to accept a plea agreement...yet it is unmentioned in their announced deals with federal prosecutors.

It is fast becoming unmentionable.

"Careful with that ax, Eugene"
Take the ginger handling the looming murder rap hanging over both men has gotten in the press… “As part of his agreement with prosecutors, Mr. Kidan pledged to cooperate with federal prosecutors… ” read a Hartford Courant Editorial called, “WILL MR. ABRAMOFF SING?”

“Mr. Kidan may also be able to help state prosecutors who are investigating the slaying of Konstantinos Boulis. Mr. Boulis, who owned the casino boat fleet, was shot and killed in 2001 during arguments over the sale.’

Reporting that “Mr. Kidan may be able to help prosecutors investigating the Boulis hit” is as understated a drollery as stating O.J. might be able to help authorities find the killer of Nicole Simpson.

This kid glove treatment illustrates how little reason there is for believing that this time the big broom will sweep everything clean.

The Abramoff Scandal is The Big Enchilada.

Like Iran Contra, it is too big to ever be allowed to break. It involves, as we will see, virtually the whole apparatus of America’s secret government. And it leads to places that have nothing to do with Abramoff’s “cover ” as a “College Republican leader” turned “big money lobbyist.”

Exposure would open up what Sen. Fulbright once famously called, referring to the Bay of Pigs/JFK assassination, “An endless can of worms.”

Check out the truth inadvertently leaked in a trailer for one of Abramoff’s two movies, both of which were funded with money from South African military intelligence, from over a decade ago...

“He's a human killing machine. Taught to stalk. Trained to kill. Programmed to destroy. He's played by their rules... Until now. They think they control him... Think again.”

And as for you Willy? What will you say when you are wrong? Will you show your face around here again? Bush is not impeachable. Even if they could get a committee together now, the time frame to push it through would not allow it to ever happen. Look at Clinton, he got impeached for a real crime and the Senate refused to remove him from office. But to some, they think you have a great pipe dream going on.
