Russia and US are BFF's...going to study Antarctica together
RT News says
Russia, US sign memorandum on cooperation in Antarctica
Russia and the United States have signed memorandum on cooperation in the Antarctica. The document which creates legal basis for the two countries’ scientific cooperation in the region was signed by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Vladivostok on Saturday. “This is good example of constructive cooperation between the Russian Federation and the United States in this field,” Russian foreign minister said. “Scientists from both our countries will work together to explore Antarctica’s terrain, study the effects of the climate change and cooperate on a range of issues to better understand and protect our shared environment,” said Clinton. The sides also signed a joint statement on strengthening Russian-US inter-regional cooperation.
So my question is what is in Antartctica that they both want?

Probably for the same reason they are all over the north pole. OIL!

It's better for both of them to cooperate than to go to war over it. A war between the two countries would end with China taking over the world, a scenario noone in top political positions would want.

Obama and Putin came together over smack downs of Israel and Iran. Together they showed the big mouth midgets who the bosses are and averted WWIII. The Neo Cons are furious, but they've got Romney so if Romney wins peace will be averted and America and Russia wil be on the outs.

I know oil is a boring answer, but still it's the root of many conflicts in this world. I've been thinking alot about this. That Russia and the US not really being the enemies that they portait themselves to be. They actually need each other against the new guy in town, China. With their massive, almost brain washed, population they have an almost free work force and army. They will do ANYTHING for their country, and that scares the shit out of the other two.

Saw a documentary about the "soon to be war" on the north pole. Russia, Canada and Norway all want the oil there. And they speculate that Russia WILL go to war over it and that will provoke the US etc. But actually they will cooperate (at least in my opinion)and claim it together. Forgot the name of the documentary though, will write it when i remember.

What is your opinion about it?

Yes, oil and money seem to drive everything.
I just read an article yesterday..wish I could remember where. Someone was interviewing Putin and asked what he thought about Obama. Putin said he thinks Obama is sincere and really wants positive change. then Putin said he's just not sure if 'they' will let him. WOW that really struck me. it was more suttle the way he said it but I caught the 'they' comment loud and clear. If I find it again I'll share here. Right now all I remember is Putin was referring to time he and Obama had a chance to talk after/during a recent summit in Mexico....I think?

Re: Russia and US are BFF's...going to study Antarctica together
Found it! Rt interview and Putin's reply about Obama:
I met him recently on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico where we had a chance to talk. And though we talked mostly about Syria, I had the chance to feel the mood of my counterpart. My feeling is that he is a sincere man and that he sincerely wants to implement positive change. But can he do it, will they let him do it? I mean that there is also the military lobby, and the Department of State, which is quite conservative. By the way it is fairly similar to Russia’s Foreign Ministry. They are run by a number of professional clans who have been working there for decades. The thing is that in order to solve the missile defense issue, we both need to accept as an axiom that ‘yes, we are reliable partners and allies for each other’. Let’s imagine for a second we have the solution – that means that from now on we jointly assess missile threats and control this defense system together. This is a highly sensitive area of national defense. I am not sure that our partners are ready for this kind of cooperation.

What is your thoughts on this?

Actually the article i read wasn't talking about Antarctic, but for Arctic in Kara Sea, Black Sea and Texas etc., just founded an english version. It's a completely different deal and region as it seems.
