I have always consider the 'afterlife' to be very similar to how he stated.
Basically, an immortal soul or spirit moving in and out of different existences, beings, plains, planets, etc...while choosing each incarnation on a soul level.
A bit like a choose your own adventure...
For example, the book The Little Prince. While isolated on his planet, he is able to 'catch stars' and travel around exploring and experiencing new things.
Otherwise it would seem eternity could be quite boring.
I would think in a perfect design that such could not occur.
But I am just postulating here.
