List Cheap ways to get rid of BED BUGS
The best Idea I have come across was to use a steem gun on
all of the places you sit or lay down. kills all stages
of the bed bug. And to keep them from your bed, just treat your bed like a island. High bed legs smeered with some
vaseline. Also dont let any part of your bed but the legs touch anything else like the walls or the floor or night stands. when you have that sheet or cover touching the floor
it is a fast way for a bed bug to get to you.

Please list your cheap ways to get rid of them or to keep
them away here to help others who cant afford the $300.00
price tag to treat each room that some pest control folks are charging. Old tricks that worked in the 40s and 50s,
redneck ideas or hillbilly ideas. please list them all.

This works.

Google - diatomaceous earth and read it's MANY uses.

Sprinkle it on your mattress and no more bed bugs. 5lbs. $25.00 You probably won't even use 1/2 a pound...

Killed mine years ago with rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle.
Just hit all the folds of stuff and soak the areas. Kills em pretty much instantly. Repeat every day for few days then every other day for couple of weeks.
Couches and stuff with large open inside areas I threw away.

I've often thought that using flea sprays you buy to kill fleas in carpets and on furniture would help kill off bed bugs.

Of course you will have to take all the curtains down and have them laundered along with all your sheets, blankets , bedding etc. What about having an exterminator come over? Also what about shampooing all of your furniture and having the carpets steam cleaned?

Re: List Cheap ways to get rid of BED BUGS
Did you know they have "A bed bug–detecting canine "

The four posts of the bed can then be placed in glass dishes or traps. Bed bugs cannot climb smooth surfaces,

so the glass dishes will exclude more bed bugs from being able to infest the bed, as long as the bed is away from the walls and covers are kept from touching the floor.

All bedding should be laundered with soap and a borax additive and dried at a high temperature. Clothing, pillows and drapery should be dry-cleaned. Also, contents inside dresser drawers should be emptied in order for insecticides to be sprayed under the drawers.

Furniture and other infested materials can be placed in an insulated container, which is heated >

to 113-115°F.

Clothes dryer

Clothes, bedding materials, and other infested materials can be heated in a dryer to kill bed bugs. Because of the high temperature that can be reached, a few minutes of treatment is sufficient to eliminate infestations.

Steaming

High temperature steam kills bed bugs immediately without leaving pesticide residues. This treatment is ideal for mattresses and other surfaces with high contact with human skin or crevices hard to treat with other methods.

Never heard of that, but I know the method used by exterminators is extreme heat

here in Texas, its been so hot that it has killed off the fleas on my outdoor kitties, lol

But seriously, read up on the heat treatments to kill bedbugs:

USING HEAT TO KILL BEDBUGS - KTLA

From youtube:

Heat is proving to be the most effective and greenest way to kill bed bugs -- which is a growing problem across the U.S.. The KTLA Morning News (Los Angeles) did a series of segments on the technology, which features Mike Masterson, host of the Discovery Channel's Verminators Show. The ThermaPure heat technology is being demonstrated, as are some bed bug sniffing dogs that Masterson's company, Isotech, uses. To find out more about the heat technology visit www.thermapure.com

I would make a strong solution of woodworm and spray all your bedding with it. Bugs hate the smell of woodworm, but it is not toxic to people & pets.

Re: List Cheap ways to get rid of BED BUGS
I have been thinking that since mattresses are very expensive for most people, why not spray them with straight bleach? Most of the new mattresses are all white anyway. Just buy those Clorox bleach spray clean up bottles in the stores. Use up the contents and fill them with straight bleach. Then spray the mattresses with it. On top, the sides and the bottom. Also the foundation. Would that kill the bed bugs? You have to use the Clorox spray clean up bottles because their sprayers are designed to withstand the acidity of bleach.

So would you want to sleep on a mattress that reaks of bleach? That would make a person sick in no time.

yep, heat works

they tell you to take everything heat sensitive out of the room, electronics with components which could melt and similar items

then apply the heat, and as you said, one hour should do the trick

They sell units to heat the room, but I'm sure someone handy and smart could rig something up without spending $300. I

Maybe a high powered space heater? Just guessing...

'm including the link, tho, because it may give someone guidelines for design

Review comments are always useful as well, I find

Re: List Cheap ways to get rid of BED BUGS
No don't sleep on the mattress until a few days have gone by and it smells less powerful. Besides you want the bleach to seep into the mattress for a few days anyway. I have tried this method on my own mattress after one of my cats urinated on it. Not only did the smell go away, but spot did to. After that I decided to spray the whole top of the mattress and it turned it bright white and like new again; not that it was dirty in the first place. I now use a plastic mattress cover and this has saved a lot of problems.

You could probably dilute the bleach a little bit with water, so as not to make it so potent, but still you need to make up a mixture that is pretty strong.

I forgot to say that one time I shampooed the top of my mattress with some of that heavy traffic rug shampoo and it turned out beautiful.Just spray it on allover the mattress and scrub it with a scrub brush and a wash cloth. Then you let it dry for a few days uncovered. After that you vacuum clean the top of the mattress real good, and it will look just like new.

113 degrees isn't that hot, plenty of places around the country got that hot this summer.

I would thing I would close off the room, turn a heater with a thermostat cut off so it didn't go above say 118 or 120--heat up the room for awhile and they will all die.

It will take longer for the heat to penetrate into deep places, like the center of a mattress.

A regular cycle in the dryer gets that hot fast.....

Put things in a car and leave in the sun....

Still I cringe at the thought of bed bugs or lice, could happen to the best of us just by leaving our homes. They hitch a ride on luggage, clothes.....

A friend of mine has a "natural' lie removal franchise, says they are active everywhere.....now I think about it all the time--movie theaters.....she sells a cover for the back of your seat--protect your hair....I but the hood up on a jacket--but they could come home on your clothes...hf
