A direct result of the carribean plate, Nazca plate and the east pacific rise for that matter.

The equatorial subduction of this region will see over time, the Galagapos trench narrowing the land mass separating the gulf of Mexico from the pacific seas.

The volcanoes can only try to keep up will the land building, but looking upon what we currently see as a narrow strip of land, it will only get a lot narrower as the subduction between the plates increases.
