Strong 6.9 Magnitude earthquake rattles Greece, Egypt, Jordan

4:54 a.m. January 8, 2006

ATHENS, Greece – An undersea earthquake with a magnitude of at least 6.7 shook Greece on Sunday and was felt as far away as Egypt and Jordan, officials said.
The quake struck at 1.34 p.m. local time (6:34 a.m. EST) was centered near the island of Kythira, about 125 miles south of Athens, the Athens Geodynamic Institute said.

Three people were slightly injured, and Kythira's airport and buildings in the southern island of Crete suffered minor damage, authorities said.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the magnitude was 6.9, while the U.S Geological Survey said it measured 6.7.

The earthquake was felt in Cairo, Egypt, about 745 miles southeast of the epicenter, and in Amman, Jordan, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Re: Strong 6.9 Magnitude earthquake rattles Greece, Egypt, Jordan
Wow! This was a big one.

From Jerusalem Post:

"The US Geological Survey, based in Colorado, and the National Earthquake Information Center in Denver gave a preliminary magnitude of 6.7, while the University of Thessaloniki, which also has a geodynamic institute, reported the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.9. The reason for the discrepancies in magnitude was not immediately clear.

Initial reports from authorities in Greece indicated there had been minor damage at the airport in Kythira and in buildings on the southern island of Crete."

"The Athens Geodynamic Institute, which initially gave a magnitude of 6.4, later amended it to 6.9 and said the epicentre was located beneath the seabed, about 200 kilometres south of Athens and 20 kilometres east of the island of Kithira."

No big afterquakes so far, and scientists say that in such a quake strong but quite deep, its a normal behaviour although the cant be sure about anything.
Also they say, that such deep quakes dont usually upset nearby faults, so we stay alert but with no strong fear for another big (or bigger) one in the same or a nearby area.

Regular quakes don't cause tsunamis, its the displacement of water up or down that does. Meaning a play slipping down or getting heaved up.

Regular shaking don't..

Asian tsunami was caused by asteriod impact not earthquake. It radiated out in a cirular movement more consistent with impact event. It also threw up massive moisture into the air which caused rain and flooding in California when it reached the west coast.

SILVER SPRING, Md., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Discovery Channel´s original
special, AMERICA´S TSUNAMI: ARE WE NEXT?, premieres in the U.S. on Sunday,
December 18, at 9 PM (ET/PT), reveals new geological evidence that seafloor
uplift from the 9.2 magnitude Great Sumatra earthquake -- not a giant
underwater landslide as previously thought --caused the devastating December
26, 2004, Asian tsunami.

I posted 11/17 "lifting" is what I mean...

Re: Strong 6.9 Magnitude earthquake rattles Greece, Egypt, Jordan
MM Exactly. The bottom line is the displacement of the water. That is what causes the Tsunami, not side to side shaking. That won't cause much of an energy "wave". You have to have an upward or downward displacement of water that creates that large energy spike.

Just like if you drop a pebble in water it displaces the water.

Up and Down = Tsunami
Side to Side = small waves if you are lucky.
