From Jerusalem Post: "The US Geological Survey, based in Colorado, and the National Earthquake Information Center in Denver gave a preliminary magnitude of 6.7, while the University of Thessaloniki, which also has a geodynamic institute, reported the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.9. The reason for the discrepancies in magnitude was not immediately clear. Initial reports from authorities in Greece indicated there had been minor damage at the airport in Kythira and in buildings on the southern island of Crete." [link to www.jpost.com] |

Also they say, that such deep quakes dont usually upset nearby faults, so we stay alert but with no strong fear for another big (or bigger) one in the same or a nearby area. |

It radiated out in a cirular movement more consistent with impact event. It also threw up massive moisture into the air which caused rain and flooding in California when it reached the west coast. |

Victor User ID: 60797 Canada 01/09/2006 09:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | MM Exactly. The bottom line is the displacement of the water. That is what causes the Tsunami, not side to side shaking. That won't cause much of an energy "wave". You have to have an upward or downward displacement of water that creates that large energy spike. Just like if you drop a pebble in water it displaces the water. Up and Down = Tsunami Side to Side = small waves if you are lucky. |
