OK..I give up.. go to youtube.. search Awakenings.. Robin Williams.. Awakenings is the most emotionally moving film I have ever seen. It delves deeply into one of the worst human fears, losing the ability to move and function, but it's never forced or manipulative, and there's no heavy-handed message or moral. It's just a fascinating story that's beautifully told.

The acting is as good as you will ever see. Robert DeNiro deftly handles all the emotional and physical challenges of his role, and Robin Williams demonstrates convincingly that he is an actor, not just a comedian. Williams is perhaps a bit too nerdy at first, but he captures perfectly all the hope, fear, exhilaration, and anguish that a doctor in that situation must be experiencing. Awakenings is based on actual people and events, and, to me at least, real events are always more powerful than even the best fiction.

Awakenings had big-name talent and Oscar nominations, but I don't think it ever had a big box office or became a popular video rental. That's a shame. I like escapist fare as much as the next guy, but once in a while, everyone should see a movie that you will remember and think about for a very long time. Awakenings deserves to be at the top of your list of movies to see.

Lazarus pill miracle for E Cape man

Johannesburg - If miracles exist, Ayanda Nqinana may just have swallowed one.

After reading a report in City Press last month, his wife, Nomfundo, insisted that he be given a prescription for the sleeping pill Stilnox, which has the opposite effect on those with brain injuries.

It worked – and brought him out of a seven-year coma.

Nqinana had been the Peddie Municipality’s director of local development before a late-night car crash on a lonely Eastern Cape road in 2005 almost ended his life.

The accident tore him from his wife and their 2-year old son, Ayavuya, and left him with severe brain injuries, a fractured hip and legs, and unable to talk, leave his bed or feed himself.

For the past seven years, Nomfundo has visited her husband in East London’s Newhaven Hospital, hoping for signs that the man she had known before the accident was still inside his body.

“His eyes, he couldn’t follow any direction. For instance, if you were talking to him, even if you move from this angle to that angle, he doesn’t follow you. He couldn’t talk. Not at all,” she said.

Nqinana’s doctors said he’d probably remain that way.

Miracle recovery

But on August 12, family friend Nceba Mokoena came across an article in City Press about a miracle recovery made by another car crash victim, hundreds of kilometres away in Gauteng.

Louis Viljoen was given the sleeping pill by chance by his mother, Sienie.

She had noticed he wasn’t sleeping peacefully and asked her doctor if she could give him half a sleeping tablet. After she did, Louis opened his eyes and said “Hello Mamma”, his first words in five years.

Nceba phoned Nomfundo immediately to ask if she had seen the story, and whether or not Stilnox might just help her husband.

Initially, Ayanda’s doctor was not convinced, telling her not to place too much faith in newspaper reports. But Nomfundo insisted.

“Because I’ve been praying a lot for my husband to get better, I can try anything that is possible for his health. So eventually we agreed to get a prescription.”

They began giving Ayanda the drug, and waited to see what would happen. Five days passed with no improvement.

Again with this bullshits called "miracles". Please stop spreading these myths. Deep coma patients are like potatoes or vegetables, they can't feel anything, they are no more. Noone should be kept "alive" with such a severe prognosis. The structural/physical damage to their brain is so severe that nothing can cure an atrophied brain now became a soup of cellular purtridity. The few people who awake from a coma have the IQ of an apple, is that life? Shackled to a bed for the rest of their miserable lives, making funny noises and faces. Just search on google images for brain ct scans of people in persistent vegetative state and compare it to normal people ct scans. Pretty self explanatory. I think the only chance to take back this people to life would be seriously researching in the field of stem cellls.

To some this sounds crewel to me is the why it should be and I have that in my will if I'm veged out for more than 30 days pull the plug. I'm a practical, common sense type of guy in nature someone under that condition would die right away, the only thing keeping you alive is a bunch of machines that's no way to live and that's torture for you and your family members to see you that way. People need to learn to detach and let nature takes its course.

Re: Miracle cure for brain damaged coma patients..... A sleeping tablet.
The brilliantly successful results obtained by waking a supposedly Brain Comotose person from their coma by giving sleeping medication can possibly be explained by a slight change in standard thought.
Some Quantum Physicists describes Mind and Brain as being seperate, with Brain being compared to a Bio Computer and the Mind with its conscious and unconscious parts as an Interface system.
I can recall reading data on surgery patients under anesthesia who were aware of and expericing trauma from their opperations, but their Brain was paralysed and they couldn't speak. Also as a clinical therapist I can recall cases where severely injured, so called unconscious, persons were told they were dead (fortunately they decided they wern't) or in one accident case involving severe skull damage the unconscious person was having a Brain plate inserted, and heard that if she survived she would never be any good again. As a result of this suggestion she subsequently found she couldn't think straight and became unemployable. This persons thinking abilities were restored and she was even able to recall the coversations of the surgeons about their relationships as they worked on her brain.
In the case of the Persons who are awakened from their comas by being given Sleeping Pills, it is likely that because their Brain had appropriate accident damaged circuits the Brain Bio Computer couldn't receive or cary out the instructions from the Mind to wake the body. Further the Mind could also have recorded, in other undamaged areas of the brain, that the brain can't wake up and this would therefore support the ongoing comatose states.

However a sleeping pill comes with a Mind/Brain recorded suggestion that mind and brain should produce a sleep state, and further that when the effects of the pill wear off that the persons, Mind and Brain should awaken. So this would either reactivate the previous ability to awaken or could create new wakening brain circuits that bypass the damaged areas, and allowed the restoration of the persons waking facilities.

I hope the above possible explanation of these recoveries whether considered right or wrong is helpful to those who have friends and loved ones trapped in these states. My congratulations to those, including medical staff, who successfully applied this seemingly simple method for awakening.
