I find it odd that this strike is in chicago of all places. Obama's home town. Maybe they still think "i won't have to pay my mortgage, or put gas in my car, cause we have a black president", is just not being done fast enough for them. LOL

The main concern with the strike seems to be that the kids won't have any place to go during school hours. Nobody interviewed in the newspaper article I read seemed to worried about the learning they would miss.

Reagan replaced the air traffic controllers, to their shock and surprise. This could be a great opportunity to start over with non-union teachers in Chicago. Too bad it's not a Republican mayor who might think of that.

Wish our district in NY state would stop giving them raises.

It's time to end public employee unions. If it takes a year of dislocation for our kids in school, it's well worth it -- for THEIR futures!

What is the average salary of a teacher in chicago? then compare what the average salary is of people in the district. the teacher's salary should not be more than 1 or 2 percent above what is the average taxpayers.


most teachers work less than ten months out of the years which is actually part-time employment. the product that they produce is very often sub-par, so why should they be paid top dollar when most kids graduate from school unable to read?

Teachers everywhere complain that they should not be evaluated on student performance measures because some factors are beyond their control.

I don't know of any other job, anywhere, where an employee is guaranteed that his review or his compensation will be based on factors entirely within his or her control. Certainly not at a professional level!

This argument should be thrown out entirely, with a slap at them for even daring to utter this idea. Millions of people have lost their jobs for reasons entirely beyond their control. It's time for teachers, especially the old ones, to start to experience this along with the rest of society.

when you think about a public employee's union, one has to ask just who are they organized against? not some rich, evil corporate owner. no, they are unionized against us the tax-payer who very often makes far less than they do.

teachers had an offer for $70k salary avg with 16% avg increases for working only 9months out of the year plus 2weeks paid vacation during work months AND free Health benefits & Pension but they want MORE MONEY!! WTF!????!

current avg is $76,000!!

Actually I don't expect that they can do much better, or that I could do better in their shoes. What kind of students can we imagine these teachers have in front of them? Think south side Chicago ...

But that's tough. I wouldn't fire teachers if I didn't think I could get better ones, but that's the measure they should be competing against, not some phony notion of acceptable performance which puts the bar way too low.

These days, one can get fired because someone in India or China can do your job cheaper. And in fact, education is going online these days too. One can find all kinds of courses on the internet, even courses from great universities. Do we really need these teachers and this education model? If it isn't working, the answer isn't to insulate the teachers and worry about how to do a little better. The modern response to business failure to fire them all and reorganize the business. The rest of the country has faced this hard reality for about 30 years now. It's time for them to face reality now too, and this strike is a great opportunity for an unexpected plot twist!

Oh, and "better" can mean "nearly as good and much cheaper". Just like business. Taxpayers are paying all these costs and they need a break.

You know what - life's a bitch like this. Shit happens out of your control. Trying to legislate shit out of life, are we? How well do you think that works in the long run?

Shit is like energy. It can change form and it can be passed around, but you simply can't make shit go away. By delegating the shit out of these teachers' lives, you are passing it onto others. The ones being shit upon are the students, because there's a chance true teachers that put their students' well being above their own are looking for jobs in Chitown.

Someone else could potentially be a better teacher that would be able to get students to a level to be able to pass standardized tests. I've seen what the standardized tests look like now, and the only way a student would fail them is if that student either can't read English or has no respect for education institutions and is just purposefully trying to make it look bad.

This mindset is not a product of poverty, violence, or homelessness. It is a product of either lazy or feeble teachers. Yes, I realize many good teachers feel emasculated with how easily teachers can catch flak for being as strict as can be needed. I'm not saying the teachers are wholly to blame; I'm saying I would rather see teachers striking because of the inability to discipline unruly children who aren't properly disciplined at home.

That these strikers' main point lies in the changes for teacher evaluations tells me that these teachers know they could be doing a better job, found loopholes to laziness within the current evaluation guidelines, and are now worried their loopholes will be closed.

These teachers need to adapt to the changing environment if they want to keep their job security. Prime example of how unions enact regression through promise of progression.

I think the reason our schools are bad is because just like welfare there is no incentive to perform. the teacher has a double layer of protection in that they have a union and they have tenure. how many people are not judged by their performance on the job?

the teacher knows that no matter how well or how poorly they perfom the salary and the benefits will be there. the teacher takes the path of least resistance and just passes the kid along much as government kicks the can down the road over the debt, at the end of the school year the troubled student, the under-educated student becomes the new teachers problem.
