The teachers are the Chevy's the students are the destination, too bad the gps is all fuc*ed up.
 Quoting: GooliaJulia

What I am comparing is the teachers. The Lincolns are the better funded schools. The Chevys are the inner city schools. Based on performance noone would want to teach at Chevy. You can try, but, you know someone is gonna do better doing the same job.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17549114

So, what went wrong? CTU President says it's all because of Chicago's "lower class students" and "students of color."

 Quoting: RTS REDUX

Some schools do better than others. Thats just a fact.
The reasons? They are what they are too.
Should you be paid less because you are at one of those lower performing schools? I dont think so
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17549114

according to an earlier poster they are already being paid twice what teachers in some of the surrounding areas are getting.

"If one understands that socialism is not a share-the-wealth programme, but is in reality a method to consolidate and control the wealth, then the seeming paradox of super-rich men promoting socialism becomes no paradox at all. Instead, it becomes logical, even the perfect tool of power-seeking megalomaniacs.

Communism or more accurately, socialism, is not a movement of the downtrodden masses, but of the economic elite."

What is R gonna do? Give it to them or give in? I noticed they are all wearing red. Seems funny to me like red is a choice of color for the unions these days.

Rahm will bend over and let the unions do what they please, then, raise taxes to pay for it. Unions and Democrats go hand in hand.

Rahm's really has everything under control doesn't he? I think this illustrates that even with a bad economy democrats and especially unions think everyone else should pay regardless.

the concept of "shared sacrifice" goes right out the window when it comes to them, their salaries, and their benefits.

this is what democrats do.
 Quoting: Davvi

Exactly. They just put 400,000 kids out in the streets of Chicago. FOX News even said they feel sorry for the kids being put in harms way so suddenly. Those kids are now being subjected to drug pushers and gang violence all because of greedy teachers who want more money, more healthcare, more vacation time, fewer students to teach, and god knows what else.

Romney needs to capitalize on this strike NOW and condemn it in the strongest possible terms. This should be a big boost to his election campaign because American public opinion is strongly opposed to this teacher strike.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 501924

Let the greedy educators to scream and cry. Aren't the teachers aware there is a recession/depression? They are lucky they're even employed.

One computer program = 1000 teachers. Online education is the future why wait? Start now and let the property taxes go down for a change.

I agree. If people can get masters and doctoral degrees over the internet, then K-12 education can be done online as well!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 501924

And what do people say when you have a internet degree? (rolls eyes)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17549114

Still better than nearly a 50 percent dropout rate. There is also this little nugget called standardized testing which is commonly used in schools today.
Those who can learn will, and those who don't; well, I guess that's what minimum wage is for.

Just read an article stating the average teacher in Chicago makes 76,000 a year before benefits...

This, and they turned down a 16% raise?

Meh....I would tell them to rot in hades!
 Quoting: CuriosityCat1

Chicago's children will probably learn as much today during their supervised recess as they would if the "educators" were there. They should all be fired and replaced by the thousands of unemployed teachers and college grads. Pull a Reagan move and cut them all off. That would truly reflect what the public wants and cut the overpaid fat from a failing system.

Teachers everywhere complain that they should not be evaluated on student performance measures because some factors are beyond their control.

I don't know of any other job, anywhere, where an employee is guaranteed that his review or his compensation will be based on factors entirely within his or her control. Certainly not at a professional level!

This argument should be thrown out entirely, with a slap at them for even daring to utter this idea. Millions of people have lost their jobs for reasons entirely beyond their control. It's time for teachers, especially the old ones, to start to experience this along with the rest of society.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19852008

Shit is like energy. It can change form and it can be passed around, but you simply can't make shit go away. By delegating the shit out of these teachers' lives, you are passing it onto others. The ones being shit upon are the students, because there's a chance true teachers that put their students' well being above their own are looking for jobs in Chitown.

 Quoting: Psychedelicat

Taxpayers are being shit on too, by the excessively high pay these teachers are getting. Most are not worth nearly that much. They're largely education majors, and back at least when they were in college, you didn't major in education if you had the brians to do a real major.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19852008

Teachers are underpaid for what they do today. I am married to one and I see what my wife does. Average teacher has 5 years if university training and compared to other 4-5 year degrees they are underpaid. Some argue that they get two months off in the summer and it is only 10 months of work, what they don't consider is how much time is put into the job during those 10 months. My wife teaches 5 classes a day and has 40 to 45 students in each of her classes. In total she has over 200 students to teach and stay on top of. Every night she is marking labs, quizzes, tests, research papers and assignments. Then she has to plan her lessons for 5 classes the next day. She easily puts in an extra 4 hours of work every night and uses Saturdays to finish off what she can't get done during the week.

Students today are not the same as students before. iPods smart phones, computers, video games, social networking, and instant entertainment are all things that distract many students in school. Teachers now have the job of being semi unqualified experts in parenting, social work, counselling, family liaison work. The problem is shitty parenting where parents spoilt their kids with toys and entertainment and wonder why tests scores are so low. Then everyone blames the teachers. Yes some shitty teachers exist but there are many great ones and for what they actually spin side the classroom and behind the scenes at home they are very under valued.

What do you think is the right pay for that? 180 days of let's say 10 hours work per day. 4 or 5 years of college, as EDUCATION majors. That is a soft degree, a degree for those who cannot do real majors. Maybe some who teach in HS have more academic Bachelor's degrees, but then their Masters (or Masters plus 30 or whatever) will be in education. In other words, they don't have to be great students.

If we want to produce great students, we should put people in front of the classrooms who are or were great students themselves. Where else do we not lead by example? If we want exciting, demand classrooms, we need to have an agile mind leading the class.

And that would be worth the $76,000 per year that CPS teachers average. But that is not what they are. They never were that and they never could be that. They lack the raw ability.

Taxpayers are being shit on too, by the excessively high pay these teachers are getting. Most are not worth nearly that much. They're largely education majors, and back at least when they were in college, you didn't major in education if you had the brians to do a real major.

Yes some shitty teachers exist but there are many great ones and for what they actually spin side the classroom and behind the scenes at home they are very under valued.

well when she picked that career path what did she think she was getting into? there are plenty of suburbs and smaller communities she can find a teaching job at with less students and less stress. If she wanted a easy job there's always Mcdonalds.

I dont feel sorry for someone who gets offered a pay increase of 16%. They make around $65K... not too shabby. My teacher friend makes $45K and he is not complaining.

The unions want smaller classrooms , which means MORE teachers, which means MORE dues, which means MORE support for their beloved Obama.

According to research, the most important factor related to student achievement is class size. Would you want your second grader in a class with 24 children or a class with 55 students?

The US scores are not low, that is just something politicians like to say to rile folks up. In the US, people who have been out of school for ten years and decide to go back to college then take the ACT and their scores are averaged in with high school student scores.

In most other countries, at about age 15, if a student is not university material, he is put into an apprenticeship program and doesn't take those tests. In many countries, the choice is not even given to them, or what their major will be. The tidbit of info that you need to put everything into perspective about student scores would be how many of the students actually take the test. And who they are, how long they have been out of high school.

Student score information is about as reliable as other information that is used to start political arguments. Yet, I never see the validity of statements about student achievement questioned. Why is that?

Re: Chicago Teachers on strike
WEEK 2.... Time to bring in some replacements and strip them of their teaching licenses.

It's against the federal law for teachers to strike. But as Obama has shown us, federal law doesn't apply to the people of Chicago.
