Quoting: ººEATºº I live in Southern California not Canada eh....9.5 is not even possible from our faults. Largest is an 8+. don't stuff twinkies up your ass it's bad for you Iv'e heard. Hmmmm .... ever looked at how the Baja peninsula was formed? Hmmmm? It ripped off the mainland. How did it rip? Wow....if it be a 10+, California is gone forever...because it would be on the ground, just like Haiti. It is less deadly when it strikes undersea. I think we could feel a 10+ here in Brazil, if it strikes LA |

Since I was a child, we have been told that L.A. is moving north due to earthquakes and would one day line up with San Francisco. Any techtonic plate capable of realigning the continent must have the potential of earthquakes of giant magnitude. Now they are trying to say that the "Big One" will not really be that big. WTF? I think that the gov't wants people to not worry about a huge earthquake so now the story changes. |

I'm not worried about the magnitude as much as the depth though...look at the 5.6 in China not too long ago.... I live in S.Cali. It can happen. And I feel a little stupid for saying this, but I had no clue the Salton Sea could Supply adequate sustainability for life...Place is a cesspool. |

"THE BIG ONE" was to be considered at max a 7.8 FOREVER until recent times with studies have jacked it up to an 8.6 8.6 Quake Possible in Southern California? Caltech Suggests New 'Mega-Earthquake' In recent years, scientists, first responders and utilities have been preparing for "The Big One," that inevitable quake that will rock Southern California to its core. It's coming. For sure. They just don't know when. But the U.S. Geological Survey and Caltech have been on the ball, working from a likely scenario, a simulated "Shakeout" (see video after the jump) that would have a 7.8 quake hitting greater L.A. It would be deadly, destructive and put us in the dark for days, if not weeks. Unfortunately, a 7.8 might now be too low of an estimate for The Big One: Rest of Article Here [link to blogs.laweekly.com] |

They're going to keep doing research, and the number will keep growing. The biggest things that happen, surprise researchers and scientists the most, you know.... |
| amachiavellian — a hundredth monkey User ID: 20940257 09/10/2012 07:49 PM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Let me ask you this question... Quoting: ººEATºº Do you think that right before the BIG ONE in California there will be a fairly widespread release of sulfur gas? I think so. Frankly I tend to agree. It makes more sense to me than bacteria from (a lot) of old wells (all at once), over a fairly wide-spread area, an area known for EQ activity. Even if the smell is being released from a bunch of these old wells - I'd have to ask myself what could be causing that all of a sudden, over such a large area, an area known for EQ activity, when these smells have been documented to present around periods of EQ activity. So maybe it turns out to be dead fish. I hope it is something like that. I really do. Then I could laugh at my stupid self for packing up my dogs, some supplies and taking a little impromptu camping trip to WI, which is probably what I'd be doing if I lived in SoCal right now. I'm not paranoid - really. I prefer to use the term "cautious" and I spook easily ... like a deer. — read for knowledge, not answers. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18681750 Post a link to where you are hearing people here in So Cal are saying things stink. Google California Stink. Google those words now & see what you get. Salton Sea. [link to www.lacanadaonline.com] There has been some speculation that the odor is caused by the Salton Sea, where the annual die-off of fish often causes a foul smell. But the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported that officials at the Salton Sea said they don't think the die-off is responsible and that air quality officials are investigating. The smell was most pronounced in parts of the Inland Empire, which is upwind from the Salton Sea. I've lived in so Cal for 24 years.. I've never smelled sulfur in the air So if its an annual thing where the fish die off why hasn't the smell Bern here before? I'm about 2 hours from the Salton sea... people reporting as far as 400 miles from Salton sea. Could a dead fish smell travel that far? I don't think so.. I think if anyone were to leak news of an impending earthquake there would be widespread panic and a large exodus out of cali. |
