Coffee skyrockets as weather affects crops

The price of coffee is skyrocketing on speculation that Colombia’s harvest will be smaller than expected for the fourth straight year.

Coffee for December delivery jumped 10.6 cents, or 6.5 percent, to finish at $1.7365 per pound. That’s the highest level since early August.

Although Brazil’s coffee crop appears headed toward a robust harvest, Colombia’s crop was hampered by heavy rainfall that caused delays earlier in the season. Colombia could produce a smaller-than-expected crop for the fourth consecutive year, Barclays Capital analysts said in a report on Friday.

Right now, I pay $6.99 for a 14 oz. canister of Trader Joe's Columbia Supremo. It's pretty good, especially for the price.

Surprisingly, Meijer brand Columbia beans are pretty good, too. A 12 oz. pkg. was on sale last week for $4.69.

The best deal is the supersize bags of coffee from Costco or Sam's.

I'll probably be heading out there by the end of the week to see what they have.

Will be keeping an eye on this to see what happens.

Re: Coffee Skyrockets as Weather Affects Crops
The Most Expensive Coffee in The World

Kopi Luwak coffee, also known as Civet Coffee, originates in the islands of Java and Sumatra, where the Asian Palm Civets (called “luwak” by locals) are found. These mammals reside in trees and feed on ripe coffee cherries.

However, luwaks naturally do not digest the cherries’ inner beans and instead excrete them as whole. These beans undergo a unique fermentation process while inside the stomach, resulting in an entirely new coffee bean with unmatched flavors.

Locals collect the still-intact beans in luwak droppings from the forest floor and then thoroughly clean, roast, and grind them just like any other coffee.

The emergence of Kopi Luwak dates back to colonial times. In the 19th century, Dutch colonial plantations in Indonesia prohibited native farmers and workers to pick coffee fruits for their own use.

However, locals quickly learned to enjoy their natal land’s celebrated coffee by collecting undigested seeds from the droppings of luwaks. The Dutch plantation owners soon caught on to the rare, exquisite coffee that locals named Kopi Luwak after the animals, and popularized it ever since.

ValBeMar Kopi Luwak Kayumas is a full bodied coffee (almost syrupy) with a rich, heavy taste and hints of caramel or chocolate. Many describe the aroma as earthy, musty, and complex.

Oh, and by the way, the coffee can cost as much as $700 a pound and $80 a cup!

When making a new pot, I use to throw out the coffee that was made earlier, but now I make ice cubes with it. Iced coffee isn't so diluted that way when you use the cubes.

Leftover coffee is good in beef stew, too. I usually add a little to the broth when I make it in the crock pot.

It's not the healthiest meal to eat, but it sure does sound good.

I've lost my appetite for meat lately, but that's happened to me before. My body craves vegetables and fruit right now.

I'll have to give that a try, though, next time I pick up a ham. My sons would love it!

Thanks for sharing!

Answered my own question:

Green Coffee Beans for Long Term Storage

Did you know that ground coffee or your typical coffee beans won’t store all that long? When you think about the things that would be in demand during and after a collapse, you know that COFFEE will be near the top of the list!

So, what’s the best way to buy coffee so that it will store for a long time? Buy ‘green’. That is, green coffee beans. What are green coffee beans? They are coffee beans in their natural state, before roasting! When you buy them in the store, they’ve already been roasted.

I’ve read a number of articles over the years regarding roasting your own green coffee beans, and it apparently is not that difficult. I admit that at this time I’ve not done it myself, but it seems pretty darn simple. It’s all a matter of how long they’re roasted as to the resulting strength of the flavor.

Those are unroasted green beans. It's easy and fun to roast them.
They keep well 6 months to a year if sealed in a plastic bin.
I did notice a flavor difference after 6 months of open air/burlap sack storage.
Now I keep them in tupperware and roast as needed. It takes me 15 minutes to roast a weeks worth.
