AC 23279794 ...... THINK, if you can, about how MUCH it costs for One or two students who haven't the intelligence to HOLD a job, let alone find one cost the taxpayers WHEN :
1. The get into trouble with the law; stealing, robbing, stabbing, shooting and killing these SAME taxpayers in jail costs, court costs, police costs .

2. When the natural hormones kick in and there are children, that need to be fed, housed, health care issues and THEIR OFFSPRING repeating the SAME thing, ALL payed for by the taxpayers.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23407649

I was refering to what the school gets out of it. All the kids show up on the count days for free shoes, the school gets funded for that many students, then they don't have to show up again until they have another count day, when they will give away something else free. I guess the school will just have to find something to use all that funding on.

Re: Free shoes for going to school?!!
Let the kids have the shoes. You are clueless how much the rich make, they can buy four mansions, a yacht, trips around the world and 1,000 dollar shoes and youre complaining about some poor child getting a 40-60 dollar pair of Nikes, Unbelievable !

It pisses me off when people pick on the poor, esp children...rant
 Quoting: APOLLO ILLUMINIST

No one is against children receiving free shoes.

You know this.

It is about the teachers and unions paying this company to give out shoes so they can falsify their records to receive a 7% COL raise each year and get their $0.77 PER DOLLAR spent on education to keep going toward their retirement funds.

Look at Chicago. They deserve it.
 Quoting: Herman The Kid

Thank you Herman. I'm all for helping kids in need out but this is different. This is bribing kids to come to school so the district can get their cash. And btw Apollo I worked my butt off in high school too and have scholarships that are really helping me out right now. So don't criticize me for trying to better myself at college and prepare for my future while there's other people like the ones in Detroit that couldn't give a sh** and will be living off of my hard work. I grew up near Detroit and understand that there's people in need there, but there is just as many that couldn't care less and will gladly take their welfare checks to continue buying their drugs and using it for other shady business. The school I'm at only requires Detroit students to get a 3.0 in order to receive admission and scholarships. The high school I received was held to much higher standards to get in here. They have all the assets they need, a new pair of shoes won't do anything but cost us money.

My encouragement to you then, forgive me for my rant

I do agree that drug testing should be done and if positive they should be cut off from welfare benefits for a number of months until the next drug test....

I agree to the stringent rules that we grew up with but guess what, it wouldnt be politically correct or ethnically fair. lol
The Ethnic students should have the same academia criteria to reach as everyone else, They can have special scholarships for them but make a high grade average requirement.

What a complete joke this school system has become. I live right near the Detroit area and their school district disgusts me. What ever happened to wanting to go to school to succeed. Why must they get a handout for showing up? People wonder why this generation is becoming so lazy...

Once a year, Detroit Public Schools pulls out all the stops to get students in their seats.
In 2010, the district enticed students with a total of $20,000 in Target gift cards. The prize for attendance in 2009: a shot to win a laptop, iPod, or 42-inch flat screen TV.
This year, every Detroit public high school student who shows up to school on Oct. 3 will be rewarded with a free pair of Nikes, courtesy of a local shoe store.

Why the problem with a private company doing sime marketing?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17549114

The problem is they're doing it on count day. Therefore, the schools will get maximum funding from the state for students that don't show up on any other day. It will end up wasting serious tax payer money on a school district that has done nothing but provide negative results year after year.

Parents should teach their kids respect and kids should learn to get ahead in life not just show up to get a pair of shoes. If I hated poor people I would give them a pair of shoes instead of an education.

Its a good tool. Say you have a 12y/o who is home on the morning school starts, moms at work , and this kid thinks he can sneak a couple more days of summer. Mom is gonna remind him that he needs to be there to get some shoes.
What about those late starters. They would not get funding for them.
Its a good thing

There is nothing wrong with free shoes..if you have never known what it's like to not have decent shoes because your family is poor..you have no idea how much those shoes mean to kids..

I am usually not for freebies..but in this case..

LEAVE IT ALONE!

I am happy to know that some kids don't have to be embarrassed by having old shoes, while others have their new Nikes, ect.

Children should not be punished for parents mistakes..period!

That's exactly it. The only reason they're giving these shoes out is to get kids there for COUNT DAY! Why not give out these shoes the next day? Or the day after? Or on Christmas? Why COUNT DAY! It is a complete set up by the school district to get kids there that would never show up in the first place without this giveaway.

So? I'd much rather my tax dollars be "wasted" on a school (which isn't a waste actually IMO), then to support the welfare bums.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22452351

So? I'd much rather my tax dollars be "wasted" on a school (which isn't a waste actually IMO), then to support the welfare bums.

To a school district that has a graduation rate of 59.74% and a dropout rate of 20%? No thanks.

It's better than having them walk around barefoot and catching hookworm.

How am I a hypocrite you shill. I worked hard in high school and got into a good college that offered me a scholarship? These kids could do the same thing I did if they went to class and worked hard. You reap what you sow. I put in the effort and received rewards in return. These kids put in no effort and still receive the rewards. It doesn't make sense!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22452351

A scholarship is still a gift, even if you attained certain standards.
What makes you think these students cannot attain to these standards? From that article?
You have shown your ugly pretense, live with it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17549114

There's quite a difference between studying hard for years to receive a gift as compared to showing up to school for one day to receive a gift and you know. You are the ugly one.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22281555

That's exactly it. The only reason they're giving these shoes out is to get kids there for COUNT DAY! Why not give out these shoes the next day? Or the day after? Or on Christmas? Why COUNT DAY! It is a complete set up by the school district to get kids there that would never show up in the first place without this giveaway.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22452351

I will explain again.
You have kids at home, in single parent homes, some of these parents are at work. Lots of kids are gonna try to sneak a couple of more days of summer without mom knowing.
So, if 100 more kids show up after count day the school will not recieve funding for those kids.
Just a FREE tool to motivate kids and a oppurtunity for a company, at thier expense, to do some marketing

Re: Free shoes for going to school?!!
Tax money put into schools is seriously a drop in the bucket compared to the vast wastes by military "padding" ($100 lightbulbs, $50 paperclips) so certain areas don't lose funding.

Money put into education is not wasted. Education is an investment - yes, a lot of kids from poor areas have bad attendance records and giving out shoes on count day is an effort in much the same vein as the military padding, but this is about giving children a chance.

There are roughly a thousand uses of taxpayer money that you should be angry about before giving children shoes, or adequate nutrition.

It's a shitty world sometimes, it's a GOOD thing to try and make it less shitty.

I completely agree with everything you said. But I assure you I am from this area. The kids around here could not care less about school and most will rarely show up for the rest of they year after this free shoe day. So just like the military spending, this money will also be tossed down the drain into a district that has shown constant failure.

Explain again? Shit. Ok.
Single parent home. Kids home alone. Kid thinks he can stretch a few more days of summer without Mom knowing.
School needs all the students there for count day. Not 2 days later when Mom finds out.
A motivational tool for the kids. Whats so fucking hard to understand about that?
Most kids do not want to go on the first day. Do the count and 5,000 more students show up in the first week.
Its a win win. Common sense is lacking in a rush to eat the poor. Pfffft

Re: Free shoes for going to school?!!
Schools should not be hand out central. There are plenty of charities that give away fee shit to the poor and the poser poor. Public schools have no business getting in the shoe business or the charity rip off. Children need to show up to learn something besides what free stuff do I get today. They then grow up always expecting hand outs . Conclusion : Total and inappropriate mission creep.
