Dogs starting to act worried, barking and whining for no reason, here in Los Angeles

go take a holiday for a week, you can check into a motel or even sleep in your car if need be, stock it up with food, water blankets pillows if you want. Fill it up with gas enroute and just go east.

If you leave it any longer you may not be able to move freely and you might be caught up in social chaos, and in a place like Los Angeles that might not be good.

If you have moved out for several days and nothing happened then you might feel a little sheepish coming back, if you move out and something really bad goes down you and your dogs and family are safe and unscared by the turmoil.

I believe you, OP, and don't let the nasty people with nothing better to do than insult others get you down.

My chihuahuas (not the most sharp eyed/eared/nosed breed) can hear a jackrabbit chewing grass at 50 yards. It's really extraordinary. When one of them "goes off" there's almost always something there.

If they can hear that, then I wouldn't be surprised they would hear subtle (perhaps high pitched) precursors to earth movement. Or even the hissing sounds of gases being released.

In response to the natural gas comment, it has no smell by itself. The odor is added with a chemical like Mercaptan or a similar Sulphur based additive.

I hope you are safe...maybe the "GLP" effect will kick in and do it's magic.

I've noticed this smell over the last several months but nothing like the last two days...so bad you can taste it and you can't escape it. I'm in San Bernardino and it reeks! My dogs are acting very clingy, wanting to come indoors....which is very unusual. My boss's dog tonight kept whining while we were working late. I would take him for a walk thinking that's what he wanted but he wouldn't stop...drove us both nuts. Usually this time of night I hear the neighbors dogs barking or coyotes howling. It's been EXTREMELY quiet.

Correct OP.. That's the smell of sulphur emanating from the bottomless pit.. I'd move far from that lake.. Did they really blame it on dead fish? wow how logical.. I bet fish have died but they don't smell of sulphur. And then two nights back my dogs just start going crazy chasing and barking at nothing i could see.. i guess they sense what we can't.

- Big migrations of butterflies.
- Unexplained lights in the sky

If lots of animals in the area start acting "strangely" and the cats in the house start getting antsy as well... it's a pretty good sign a quake is brewing and will happen within a few hours. The more excited their behavior the closer you are to the epicenter has always been the "accepted observational=based thinking" on that subject. Our three cats climbed in bed with us (which they never do all at once being too territorial to share their "daddies" and the bed with even their other cat friends) just prior to the North Ridge quake. We were living in LA - by Hancock Park - at the time. They were all three in our bed, and woke us up, nudging and meowing until we got up to feed them, but they didn't want food. As soon as got back in bed, they followed and stayed there wanting to be petted and scratched and touched. I turned the TV on and then felt the quake as it rippled down thru LA. No damage of any seriousness in our area, but we did notice that the cats stayed right beside us for about two hours after the inital shock. They would not leave the bed unless one of us did - and then one of their number would follow us closely and stay by us until we were back in bed all together.

Cat bonding behavior I guess. Making sure their "pride" as all gathered together in a safe soft warm place til the danger passed.

My dogs are perfectly calm.

In central Cali here. I always feed the blue jays on our porch. As soon as I step onto the porch they line up in the tree all excited to get their nuts. Today I went out and there were no birds. Also the little birds did not show up. And my cat, who never wants to come inside at night, ran past me to get in the house as I was walking inside. It seemed like he didn't want to be left alone out there.

If y'all remember, last week, I believe it was, there was a swarm of earthquakes with a couple of 5 pointers just south of the lake. Now it seems like the swarm is moving up the San Andreas going NW. I really hope this isn't the precursor to something much bigger.
