Christians Avoid Certain Bible Passages
For example, Luke 12:47.
My mom admits that Jesus did not challenge slavery.
Why not? You did not have to keep slaves back then. Yet Jesus tells us to beat them.
They say it is wrong to hold people of the past to our modern moral standards. But Jesus is supposed to be perfect without sin. Clearly slavery is sin and he is allowing it.

Re: Christians Avoid Certain Bible Passages
Hi!

There is always an answer but many times it is rejected by those who do not believe for one reason or another. At the end of the day all scriptures fall into the greatest commandment Jesus gave which is to love one another and God.

Yes even the scriptures about judgment. A God of love would not turn a blind eye to evil and allow it to happen with no consequences. It breaks His heart when people do evil but He will not control them and this includes taking away consequences - because if He did that or if He controlled them we would be nothing but a program and thus not be able to love or know love. This is a very basic explanation. A quick internet search can lead you to much more in-depth knowledge.

Many verses thrown at Christians are taken out of context. There is a verse about Jesus being a door. If you took that as an individual scripture and threw it at Christians then everyone would think Jesus is an actual door! But alas when we look at that scripture in context He is not!

Same with that verse and slavery. I personally do not believe Jesus agrees with slavery. If you do a internet search you will find arguments from both sides from which you can make your own choice. As a Christian and someone who knows Jesus somewhat I believe that with all my heart those verses do not mean in any form that Jesus supported or agrees with slavery.

Also from a more secular point of view maybe something of interest would be to watch the movie Amazing Grace - here is the link if you haven't seen it before..... [link to www.imdb.com]
Wilberforce only fought so hard for slaves to be freed because of his relationship with Jesus. Jesus prompted him to fight for them and to end slavery. It took time (as it does for all Christians) for him to grow in understanding Christ and what he was called to do - and when he finally got there Jesus lead him strongly.

Another important thing to note and remember is that Jesus calls all His children to be servants to all - to not be cruel masters or rulers - but to love and serve others with a giving heart. Of which He was the greatest servant of all... There is a huge difference between slaves and servants - servants are to not take abuse - but they do give from their heart as they can to others. In saying that Jesus promotes slavery you are making Him out to be someone who is cruel or mean or false - however Jesus says He Himself is to be a servant to ALL - so He is in no way being cruel or mean or false because He makes Himself the lowest of servants to every man who would accept His sacrifice of love for your sins.

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” Mark 10:45

“who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant” Philippians 2:6-7

"Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all." Mark 9:35

Jesus is very much against abuse of power, abuse, torture, evil, and His heart breaks when we suffer. He calls us to love others, to give and serve. Some Christians sadly fail - but we are all on the journey to knowing Him more. Also there are wolves in sheeps clothing as the bible warns us - those who say they are Christian but really they are not and often times abuse their position over others in His name. For which they will be judged. Judgment and Mercy both are part of who God is and both have equal roles always within His character of love.

Luke 12:46-48

King James Version (KJV)

46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

Re: Christians Avoid Certain Bible Passages
It's an example nitwit! Christians are servants of God and are expected to do certain things. Sure, God is love but know what else He is? He's tough. He's not playing. When He says do this, don't do that, He ain't kidding. You don't do something important you know is expected of you and God will very much allow some shit to slam you. Yeah, then, he'll have your attention. Ask Jonah. He had a fishin trip he hadn't planned. But this passage is for the SERVANT of God, so don't worry, you only serve the other guy. Sometimes ass-whoopins for the lost only come after you leave this world. The catch is, then, they never stop. If God tears you, then He binds you up. You belong to God. He won't throw you away. But if you don't belong to God, then the punishment and torment after death never end, there is no relief. See you at the judgment seat of God chowderhead.

Aside from the context issue, it never seems to occur to these people that Christians are tired of having to sit under a spotlight while hostile punks fire questions at them and then laugh no matter what the answer. And if you make them sit under the spotlight and demand that unless they can answer every little thing their view is invalid, they scream bloody murder and run away. Christians are tired of entertaining the inquisitor punks.

Re: Christians Avoid Certain Bible Passages
All throughout scripture The Christ demonstrates His servant role. He serves both men and The Father. He ever abides to serve His people.

"Servant" in the greek is "doulos", which means "slave".

The apostles referred to themselves as "slaves to Christ". The were yoked (bound) to Christ in spirit.

Scripture tells us that The Christ "purchased" his people with his own blood. It was the price paid for His servants.

There are many, many scriptural references to this topic. Here is a video on the topic you may find interesting:

Re: Christians Avoid Certain Bible Passages
The thing is though regarding the servant/slave definition. Whatever it may be. You cannot take one part of the bible and disregard the rest of the bible. Each part of the bible needs to be looked at in context of the whole book. Yes we are to serve others even if that definition is similar to or the same as slave. However we cannot disregard the verses that also say to protect ourselves, to arm ours selves with God's Armour, to know that God is a good God and gives only good gifts, to shake the dirt of our shoes. Being a servant for others does not mean we are to be abused by others without using our God given freedom to remove ourselves from abusive situations if we are able to. Again there is a difference between being a servant as we are called to be in the bible and a modern definition of a slave which is someone who is abused by power.

And also don't forget Jesus says His yoke is easy and light. Actually the yoke of Jesus gives us freedom and makes life a lot easier in many ways when we are able to cast all fears, cares and worries on Him as He asks us to do.

Re: Christians Avoid Certain Bible Passages
Men in general avoid certain things OP. This thread speaks of servitude and slavery.

What does it mean to be in bondage to something? Consider the following:

Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, etc...

A man who is overcome by these things is in bondage to these things. He is a slave to these things. He is a slave to the lusts of the eyes and the lust of the flesh and the pride of this life.

Men who are overcome by these things will avoid discussing them.

Some men love these things and seek and crave these things. They love their bondage to these things.

Other men come to Christ and ask that he remove them from these chains and He removes these yokes of bondage and replaces them with His yoke, which is: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

When Christ puts his yoke upon a man, that man is bound to these. He is a slave to these now.

peace,

Your mom is wrong. Jesus did challenged slavery. When he said "Do to others as you would have them do to you (niv luk 6:31)", he was actually challenging inhuman treatment against each other including slavery.

Do you know all people in this world are more or less slaves? If your mom worked for others, she's slave in some way. You can have "slaves" or in modern world we called them servants or workers or laborers, but Jesus advised to treat anyone including the workers (or "slaves") with respect, catering for their needs as we would on ours.

Luke 12:47 is part of parable which in one way, is basically saying, everyone get what they deserved. The servants "being beaten" does not necessarily mean God is doing the beating. If you cut your finger because you're not careful, then you are "being besten" ... by yourself. It is called the law of sowing and reaping, "you reap what you sow" (Gsl 6:7).
