2 bright stars together in the North tonight that disappeared at almost the same time??

I was backing out of my driveway tonight & noticed 2 very bright stars (the brightness of Venus lately)in the North/slightly North East. They were almost side by side & I said to my son, "check out those 2 stars just there". Before we'd gotten out of the driveway he said, "one's disappearing", so I stopped to watch & it faded totally, then the other one did the same. I have never seen these stars (???) in that position before or disappear like that.
