They completely destroyed them! I suggest you watch the movie because it reveals more truths than what many may think. And I feel it relates very clearly to our present day situation.
The "engineers" as they were called were delayed by their experiment(the aliens) when they lost control, and were really on there way to earth to destroy humanity. The robot is the most cryptic of them all. Listen to what he says very carefully.
This is my own theory, but humans are the progenitors of the aliens, not the other way around. They need us more than humans need them, orelse they would not be here. The greater does not take from the lesser! It's obvious by all the abductions that they need genetic material because they are a dying species. Just my take.
