Millions of dead fish washed up in salt lake
Scientists have confirmed that the hideous stench engulfing Southern California on Monday came from dead fish that washed up in the Salton Sea, as rotting carcases continued to fill the salt lake.

Re: Millions of dead fish washed up in salt lake
Fish are always dead at the Salton Sea. Since you're in the Netherlands I can see why you might think this is news. When you walk on the shore, you are walking on fish carcasses and fish bones. The sea itself is black, not brown, but black. It's from all the agriculture chemical runoff. It's actually quite a site since all buildings and businesses are abandoned, it's literally a ghost town. Hardly anything can live there, and no one swims in it.

There is a nudist camp out there. Drifters etc. live in their cars and tents and run around naked. We used to off road down there and always had to drive by the nudies.

Re: Millions of dead fish washed up in salt lake
Dead fish don't emit sulphur smell. They emit dead fish smell. Volcanoes emit sulphur which when emitted in water can kill fish. Perhaps there was a volcanic release of sulphur that killed all these fish.

The Salton Sea is a man made body of water. A dike broke about a hundred years ago and it flooded this area with water. Maybe the water has now percolated far enough down in the ground to reach the magma that's a mile or so below the surface, resulting in boiling mud pots and sulphur releases.

The water from the river was fresh water, but the area that flooded contained salts which dissolved in the water.
