But makes it convenient for all of this to go down at the same time. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 19458879 United States 09/13/2012 04:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Getting rid of possible mines sounds like a good step to take before sending in the carriers. I'm no expert, but isn't this a no-brainer? As we know they are no mines in the channel, maybe in the coastal waters of Iran but so far Iran hasn't mined anything. Now the USS Ponce is being sent in to this exercises the USS Ponce is not a minesweeper and to me it makes no sense for it to be there. There was a lot of talk about The USS Ponce was being rush re fitted as a special operations floating base. Now the Brass is denying this and saying is a helicopter carrier to support mine sweeping operations. This is an old ship and it was refitted in a hurry to fill a gap on something we don't currently have. [link to en.wikipedia.org] |

I was asking if all this shit with Libya ties in with the shit going on between Israel and Iran. :infnty: :ihavgsbmp: |

Like I said above they would of had to plan all of this along time ago to make sure the embassy got overrun and counsel was murdered Get all countries involved to set up this exercise, but what's more interesting is the US navy rush to update this USS Ponce ship into a controversial re fit which to this day is truly unknown |

Maybe they have a new type of mine or quiet mini sub we don't know about. A while back during another exercises an Iranian Sub went undetected and took pictures of one of our Carriers. Maybe this Exercises is testing the waters with some new sensors technology to see what Iran has up their sleeves before all hell breaks loose. You have to look it at this way, the U.S. will not tolerate Israel using nukes, the U.S. is not going to Nuke Iran because we care too much about our image and we know if we were to Nuke Iran first the whole world would hate us. So we are going to fight a conventional war but something tells me that Iran has something up their sleeves that we are worried about. |

So go ahead and ask a question. Quoting: Ready2bugout AKA R2B BOB Whats the total count in the area and how long would it take them to get into striking range on Iran? Thanks. Exactly! :infnty: :ihavgsbmp: |

So go ahead and ask a question. Quoting: Ready2bugout AKA R2B BOB Whats the total count in the area and how long would it take them to get into striking range on Iran? Thanks. As far as the two destroyers one is in Libya within range already the other one is 3 days away. As far as the exercises do the math each country normally sends 1-3 ships. Since this is U.S. lead I will say 4 mine sweepers, the USS Ponce, 2 subs within range of the exercise and 3 Destroyers and maybe one cruiser. And Add to the 3 carriers USS Enterprise and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. I'm going to estimate on the low end 50 ships Next week’s maneuvers are unprecedented in scope. France, Japan, Jordan and New Zealand are among the more than 30 countries expected to take part in the exercise, which begins Sunday and lasts through Sept. 27. Some, such as Britain, will be contributing ships and other hardware. Others are sending personnel and observers. And that my friend is a lot Tonnage for such a small area [link to www.boston.com] |

Here is something else to look at from an unlikely source, Below is a financial report regarding a company that transports other ships and how busy they are being kept by transporting U.S. navy minesweepers to the gulf. [link to www.bloomberg.com] Dockwise Profits Aided by U.S. as Mine Sweepers Deploy: Freight The four delivered in June doubled the number in the Persian Gulf, said Greg Raelson, a spokesman for the 5th Fleet. They accounted for 10 percent of Dockwise’s business in the second quarter, according to the company’s Aug. 14 presentation. The Defense Department said in July it would keep two carrier strike groups in the gulf until at least March. Each consists of an aircraft carrier, a guided-missile cruiser, two guided-missile destroyers, an attack submarine and a supply ship. The U.S. and more than 20 allies plan a minesweeping exercise in the region this month, the U.S. Central Command said in July. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 19458879 United States 09/13/2012 05:14 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thank you. I like naval history and keep up to date with most naval news. Unlike air strikes and special ops, that you hear last minute. It takes time for naval assets to be put into place. You have to take into consideration that we can't just send the closest ship available if they don't have the support of other ships near by to provide them with food and fuel. Whenever you hear of an Aircraft battle group it usually consists of 2-3 destroyers, 1 cruiser, 2 subs and 1 refit ship at minimum. |
