"Zombie" Bees Electronically Enhanced to Help Solve Die-Off Mystery, CCD
National Geographic News

Published September 12, 2012

To learn more about a bizarre, zombie-like behavior recently discovered in honeybees, researchers are now tagging the "zombees" with tiny radio trackers.

When infected by parasitic maggots of the scuttle fly, the bees apparently desert their hives at night and cluster near outdoor lights, wandering in increasingly erratic circles on the ground before dying.

The parasite could be controlling the honeybees and making them abandon their hives—or perhaps the infected bees are "committing altruistic suicide" to protect their hive mates, said entomologist John Hafernik of San Francisco State University.

Hafernik accidentally discovered the zombie bees last year while searching for dead bugs to feed lab insects. After collecting a handful of bees under a campus streetlight, he noticed maggots emerging from the corpses.

Re: "Zombie" Bees Electronically Enhanced to Help Solve Die-Off Mystery, CCD
A New Threat to Honey Bees, the Parasitic Phorid Fly Apocephalus borealis

Honey bee colonies are subject to numerous pathogens and parasites. Interaction among multiple pathogens and parasites is the proposed cause for Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), a syndrome characterized by worker bees abandoning their hive. Here we provide the first documentation that the phorid fly Apocephalus borealis, previously known to parasitize bumble bees, also infects and eventually kills honey bees and may pose an emerging threat to North American apiculture. Parasitized honey bees show hive abandonment behavior, leaving their hives at night and dying shortly thereafter. On average, seven days later up to 13 phorid larvae emerge from each dead bee and pupate away from the bee. Using DNA barcoding, we confirmed that phorids that emerged from honey bees and bumble bees were the same species. Microarray analyses of honey bees from infected hives revealed that these bees are often infected with deformed wing virus and Nosema ceranae. Larvae and adult phorids also tested positive for these pathogens, implicating the fly as a potential vector or reservoir of these honey bee pathogens. Phorid parasitism may affect hive viability since 77% of sites sampled in the San Francisco Bay Area were infected by the fly and microarray analyses detected phorids in commercial hives in South Dakota and California's Central Valley. Understanding details of phorid infection may shed light on similar hive abandonment behaviors seen in CCD.

ZomBee Infection Map; for US ..

Here (EU) we have similar also very big problems, this dangerous problem is global and looking for great attention ..

Bees are dying at abnormal speed and hope this is real cause of CCD ..

Honestly think nothing is that simple, bees have to to0 many enemies today but it's nice they make some advances in the search for causes of CCD ..

The bee die off was solved months ago when it was found to be due to imidacloprid and clothianidin. Finding that some percentage of bees lose their bee minds for an alternate reason within nature isn't enough for Bayer and Monsanto to escape their responsibilities on this.

The big problem is GMO plants with insecticide like BT corn, and major brands of weed killer from Bayer and Monsanto. If that does not weaken them enough then these parasites finish the job.

Bee colonies survive in the vicinity of heritage seeded organic plants, what a coincidence.

Your panacea parasite reference is most likely big media cover for Monsanto, Bayer, and other obnoxious corporations.

"With an eye made quiet by the power of harmony and the deep power of joy, we see into the life of things." William Wordsworth

And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe—the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.

John F. Kennedy Inaugural Address

Lincoln's economic advisor Henry C. Carey explained the universal issue in his 1851 Harmony of Interests:

"Two systems are before the world.... One looks to pauperism, ignorance, depopulation, and barbarism; the other to increasing wealth, comfort, intelligence, combination of action, and civilization. One looks towards universal war; the other towards universal peace. One is the English system; the other ... the American system, for ... elevating while equalizing the condition of man throughout the world."

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." - Albert Einstein

You are always welcome ..

We all have big fight with new bees diseases worldwide ..

This year was also extreme drought and plants did not produce nectar sufficiently ..

Also drought was worldwide expanded and we all had a very low honey yield here, old people saying here never remember bad year like was 2012 ..

Look at GMO's that produce pesticides. Can the bees magically avoid pesticides that a plant now makes throughout it's system internally?

This reality is called the Game of Poverty.

It was created by Sophia the Mother as a game for her husband, God the Father to play.

All souled beings act as player avatars for God to play the game.

The meaning of life is for all souled beings to come together and figure out how to end all Poverty.
