But no, that would be communism. Goverment isn't ALWAYS bad people! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12672712 idiot the government has been stepping in to maintain order at some point no matter how much they enforce monetary regulation people are not going to want a piece of paper which will soon be worthless. you either have tangables or barter when that happens plenty of history to confirm that if you go to the trouble to study some |

The people who you pay rent to will happily evict you we ALL rent. Try NOT paying your property taxes and see how that works out for you. The people YOU pay rent to (the city/town/municipality) will happily evict you. Ban guns to "save the children" but killing them in the womb is totally cool......I see; it makes perfect sense now. |

The people who you pay rent to will happily evict you From reading about SHTF events, it will go like this: Food / electricity / supplies runs out, 90% of people living in the apartments try to go to their relatives. The people left in the apartments either: Have guns, and are a large family, gang, or group that trusts each other a lot. They "take over" the apartment complex. The owner of the complex is not going to evict ANYONE, because most people will leave themselves and anyone that doesn't will stay there because they have a good number of trusted people with them. Basically, apartment complexes will not inhabited by the original occupants before the SHTF event because most people that live in an apartment do not know their neighbors very well. A large family will probably move in AFTER the SHTF and set up a base there. When the shit hits the fan, it is the guy with the biggest gun and the most bullets who makes the rules. You think civilian law enforcement are going to help you do an eviction when the grocery stores are being looted and there are riots in the streets? Fat fucking chance buddy. It is those who "own" who will be screwed. All you dumb asses with mortgages will find out real quick. Our government is run by the banks and they will gladly enforce foreclosures for as long as they can get away with it....Until the country descends into chaos. Who the hell do you think owns most of your rental properties brain child? Say hello to the bank's enforcement youself. |

It's possible that apartment owners or banks could become feudal lords like English imposed in Ireland and Scotland, and a lot of people would become serfs, or maybe tenant farmers in lieu of money. I see this as very likely since it follows history. It gets complicated. Let's say a person dies and squatters come in and take everything and live in the home. Then the deceased family arrives to claim the property. See the issues? People assume either nothing will happen, or a complete collapse, but neither of those outcomes is very likely. What probably will happen is a slow collapse, or varying degrees of chaos. |

Eating pets, shoe leather, and women giving sex for a can of soup. Yea people go nuts when they're starving. You could always just kill your landlord. But maybe he'll get you first. Most likely you'll just have to pimp your girl out and let him bust nuts all up inside of her with no condom. Moral of the story, get ready now. Where do you get these fantasies from? I think if money was worthless, they'd at least accept your valuables for awhile, or even food. Landlords will be hungry too. Quoting: Earth Daughter If money was worthless then the landlords can't get any. I mean, you could give them legal paper money, if they refuse to accept it, it's their problem. It says on the paper money that it's a legal tender. (if it's not printed at home, lol) Also, it would apply to everything else, so we would have a totally new situation, not only rent paying problems. |

You'd probably be ahead to have someone making sure the pipes don't freeze, the yard stays cleared, the windows aren't broken out. Besides, most of us aren't stupid assholes. Throwing a renter out means you think you have another renter lined up who can pay. There won't be one in this scenario. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1110734 United States 12/08/2012 03:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If there's no authority, which is usually how such a scenario is illustrated (WROL), then there's no rules of civilized behavior. That means utilities will get cut, and a lot of people will move out. During the Great Depression, a lot of agricultural workers were sharecroppers in the South. They'd lived on these tenant farms for generations. Then they were evicted. People abided by the law then, I doubt they will now. In lieu of money, the only things of value are bartered goods and services. Some very normal transactions could occur, or some very heinous ones in the abscence of a monetary system. Since whole cities could lost utlities, it matters not, for people will vacate places without sewers and running water, but will tolerate a lack of electricity and natural gas for heating. I look for marijuana to become a very common barter item. Sweat through hard labor will likely become a service provided for rents. Unless one has marketable skills that the landowner desires, or can produce a good of some kind like shoes, gloves, sharpening, felling trees, growing crops, etc, then why bother accepting tenants in the first place? |

Some were little more than holes due in the sides of hills and supported with branches. Don't think you won't be homeless. It can very well happen. It just depends upon how much authority there is as the collapse progresses. We have tons of empty property now, but there's tons more in homes that haven't been foreclosed upon yet. Then lots of renters as a result of people losing income and their homes. I look for a lot of squatting to take place. |

One of the first rules for any disaster is to have a place to go and make sure you are nowhere near a large population center. I live in Iowa and no one here was hurting for food or jobs. Their job in Iowa was to make food...plenty of work to go around when people in big cities are starving. |
