Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire is spewing lava and ash and the director of the national disaster agency says officials are carrying out “a massive evacuation of thousands of people” in five communities.

The statement by Alejandro Maldonado comes after the volcano spewed lava nearly 2,000 feet (600 meters) down slopes billowing with ash on Thursday.

(Legend of the Volcano) Leyenda del Volcán teaches that destruction is always followed by rebirth,[28] implying that Maya-Quiche culture can be reborn.[29] It relates the origin of the people in Guatemala in "one day that lasted many centuries".[30]

It begins with six men, three of whom appeared from the water and three of whom appeared from the wind.[31] Asturias' emphasis on the number three throughout the legend is in reference to the number's importance in Nahuatl tradition.[32] The three men from the water nourish themselves with stars and those from the wind walk through the forest like bird-men.[33]

In addition to these men there are two gods, Cabrakán, who provokes earthquakes, and Hurakán, who is the giant of the winds and the spirit of the sky.[34] Hurakán produces a tremor and all of the animals flee from the forest.[35] One of the six men, who is named Nido (the word for "nest" in Spanish), is the only being that remains and is ordered by a trinity, consisting of a saint, white lily, and a child, to build a temple.[36] Afterwards the trees begin to fill with nests, illustrating how this story exemplifies the process of renewal.

This legend narrates a clear struggle between religions. It contrasts Catholicism (e.g.: references to "little crosses" and the trinity) with the forces of Cabrakán and Hurakán, who represent Maya-Quiche religion.

Wow, sure hope that cloud is not toxic. Certainly does not look healthy heading along the ground like that. Huge, dark, cloud.

Unfortunately it is toxic and very hot, pyroclastic flows are very dangerous. If that is one, I'm not sure I know there are pictures of flows from this eruption though.

The agency said the volcano spewed lava nearly 2,000 feet (600 meters) down slopes billowing with ash around Acatenango, a 12,346-foot-high (3,763-meter-high) volcano whose name translates as "Volcano of Fire."

"A paroxysm of an eruption is taking place, a great volcanic eruption, with strong explosions and columns of ash," said Gustavo Chicna, a volcanologist with the National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology. He said the cinders spewing from the volcano were settling a half-inch thick in many places.

He said extremely hot gases were also rolling down the sides of the volcano, which was entirely wreathed in ash and smoke. The emergency agency warned that flights through the area could be affected.

Are you 100% sure of this? not that I've ever agreed with cern, but I've seen so many things blamed on cern.

That is something else, they are pretty much at the base of the volcano, it appears.
