GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — A long-simmering volcano outside one of the Guatemala's most famous tourist attractions exploded into a series of powerful eruptions Thursday, hurling thick clouds of ash nearly two miles (three kilometers) high, spewing rivers of lava down its flanks and forcing the evacuation of more than 33,000 people from surrounding communities.

Guatemala's head of emergency evacuations, Sergio Cabanas, said the evacuees were leaving some 17 villages around the Volcan del Fuego, which sits about six miles southwest (16 kilometers) from the colonial city of Antigua. The ash was blowing south and authorities said Antigua was not currently in danger, although they expected the eruption to last for at least 12 more hours.

There was a general orange alert, the second-highest level, but a red alert south and southeast of the mountain, where, Chicna said, "it's almost in total darkness."

There are lots of respiratory problems and eye problems," she said.

Aww all Guatemalans I know are good, hard working and kind people (it's the Salvadoreans you should be warier of). There are beautiful places there but the people are usually very nice.

That is a big ash cloud.

This is directly linked to the recent subduction quakes of Costa Rica, the entire Galagapos trench right now and associated volcanos are sure to see more of this.

Panama, Guatemala, columbia are all affected by the carribean and Galagapos plates. East pacific rise quakes as well as Gulf of Baja California will now see similar activity with quakes.

33,000, is that the latest count? People or houses .. I have so many family members down in Antigua, moved there for engineering. . I hope it doesn't effect them, my cousin just had a baby ..

what part did you visit? i was in lago de atlilan, panajachel some years back. i hear that the places along the rivers where you have to have a boat to get in are very real.

Yes, I have heard this as well. We were several times in Tikal and the Peten region, which is really amazing. Important to get a good guide - Get The Black Jaguar if in Tikal (Danilo), for he is excellent (a GLP type of guide):
