Food prices, more than some lousy video, are to blame for the violence sweeping the Middle East.


A study released by the team under the direction of professor Yaneer Bar-Yam in September 2011 (PDF) charted fluctuations in global food price since the financial crisis of 2007-8 and showed that, with each successive peak, citizens in food-importing countries reliably destabilize the political leadership.

“When food prices go up,” Bar-Yam told me this spring, “when food becomes unavailable, people don’t have anything to lose. That’s when social order is itself affected.” The most recent such peak came in late 2010-early 2011 and yielded what is commonly called the Arab Spring.

Bar-Yam also told me that the team’s model predicted another massive food price spike this fall/winter, even bigger than the last. This foreseeable crest was only exacerbated and expedited by this summer’s drought- and heatwave-bred corn disaster.

And, indeed, the World Bank recently announced that food prices have reached record highs worldwide. As predicted, we have begun to see the concomitant rise in political instability in various forms, including riots and strikes.

A lot of formerly domestic agriculture has been diverted to bio-fuel, effectively lowering human foodstuffs production and land-use.
The drought and heat-wave has damaged or destroyed much of this year's harvest.

The Department of Agriculture says the corn crop in the US will be down 13% due to the drought. But corn available for food uses is down 40% due to the ethanol mandate.

So it seems clear that the EPA could easily make up for the corn which was lost to drought by reducing or eliminating the ethanol mandate. Will the EPA act to prevent global food riots, or will the unaccountable, unconstitutional EPA bureaucrats say, “let them eat cake“?

Scarcity Of Beans Hits Lagos(Nigeria)

The price of beans has tripled in Lagos and its environs; now going for as high as N37, 000, as against the N13,000 it sold for per bag six months ago.

The price hike was attributed to scarcity of the commodity as new beans had not arrived in the markets as it should around this time of the year.

The non-arrival of newly harvested beans has been attributed to flooding that ravaged parts of the northern states where beans are grown; as well as the security challenges in the country.

“The farmers are afraid of going to their farms; they are looking for hiding places everywhere because of bombings here and there,” he said. “If the situation is not checked, other grains may also become expensive.

U.S. Lowers Forecast of Crop Yields for a 3rd Time as Record Heat Lingers

WASHINGTON — The Agriculture Department on Wednesday slightly lowered its forecast of corn and soybean yields as record heat continued to batter crops in the Midwest, making it likely that farmers will bring in one of the lowest harvests in years.

The estimates are published monthly, and this is the third report in a row in which the department has lowered its forecasts for this fall’s harvest of corn and soybeans.

The new data suggested that customers would pay more at the grocery store next year as the prices of corn and soybeans — major ingredients in processed food, animal feed and biofuels — rise to record levels.

The report said beef and poultry production was expected to increase this year as livestock producers culled or sold their herds because of higher feed costs. But prices for beef and poultry are expected to rise 4 to 5 percent next year. Eggs, milk and pork production are expected to decline because of the increase in feed prices.

The situation is so stupid... the earth is huge, there's plenty of land that if it was really needed, people could grow their own food...

I agree...all we need to do is grow our own food. People survived hundreds of years ago without huge grocery stores. Buy as many seeds as you can. Bags of top soil can be stacked neatly in a corner ready for use.

Even having a small petting zoo wouldn't be a bad idea...bunnies, chickens, small rodents.

Society relies on produced goods WAY too much. I think that completely removed our animals within.

Seeds will be one of the best bartering items to have, too.

We have seen this year how natural disasters can hinder growth--actually, last year there was much devastation, too.

It appears that these disasters are becoming more regular and pronounced in terms of frequency and intensity, and not just in the states, but worldwide.

I know many on GLP are way ahead of the game when it comes to prepping for what is to come. I've been thinking of a way to get my neighbors to prep without sounding like I'm a conspiracy theorist or part of the lunatic fringe. Think it's too late for that?

In my opinion Franklin D. Roosevelt was a Socialist who helped us along the path of being a welfare state and his words ring hollow to me.

You are correct the possession of food is power and has been used to control people nationally and internationally and under obama, we are experiencing a frightening beginning of control over our ability to grow our own food.

We look at some countries in the EU who have declared peppermint to be a controllable herb, which is frightening as periodically this nonsense of control is attempted in the United States.

What this means is that eventually a doctor will be needed to write a script for vitamin D and who knows what the prices will be.

Internationally food is used o control the behavior of foreign countries and sadly typically those in need suffer as any socialist or communist country experiences a trickle down effect where the government receives the best, then the military and the dredges go to the people.

Without a doubt, though if we would close the purse strings to the middle east perhaps they would become more rational in their belief systems.

yes.... frame the conversation around preparing for a natural disaster that is common for your area... hurricanes, winter blackouts, whatever. Phrase it as, "I don't want to be caught unprepared and fly by the seat of my pants like last time!"
