The events imply that the very center, maybe only 1000 km radius, has gone into sustained fusion but it is very modest with respect to what the Sun is doing. Now the heat from this fusion is working its way to higher levels.
Since Jupiter used to be 35,000 Kelvin at the center and now the theory proposes 5 million Kelvin within the core of the reaction, the heat is conducting and convecting upwards to higher and higher levels.
It is a "slow" ignition.

Many people are in for hell on Earth though. There are even some realities where Earth and Joop meet. Sun gets ornery after a while.
